Description

Nominated for 3 Academy Awards®, this powerful and poignant film stars Glenn Close as a woman who poses as a man in order to work and survive in repressive 19th century Ireland. I can't say anything bad about this film. The music was haunting, the actors-superb. One of the best films I've seen in a long while.

Curious and fascinating. I wonder how many people actually lived a secret life like that, and if it was recognized at the time? It would be a good subject for a PhD thesis in history.

It was interesting to watch. The costumes and set designs were fabulous. The acting by Glen Close was wonderful. I loved the historical period that this was filmed in. My only complaint is that the film came out of sync several times throughout the viewing and I had to pause continuously.

Not a bad movie, but forgetable. Janet McTeer was great, her character was intriguing; the character Albert Nobbs was too uninteresting to really appreciate Glenn Close. This is a very forgetable movie primarily because it never moved beyond the surface to explore any character in depth. Significant characters died and I didn't bat an eye. It stirred no emotions whatsoever in me because there was no reason or opportunity to connect with any of them.
  • Incredible!

Glenn Close is Incredible as Albert Nobbs! Janet McTeer is slamming as Mr. Page! Glenn should have won The Best Actress Oscar for this film! I guess some Academy Members weren't convinced. I loved the acting in this movie!
  • Surprisingly new and complex look into gender roles

I disagree with the reviewer who thought the film fell into hollywood tropes on gender. In fact, I found the film did a great job re-problematizing the issue of attraction and femininity and recasting it as an outgrowth of various wants for stability and companionship in a time where those two are exactly what is scarce. Albert Nobbs as a character is not your typical abused woman, nor is it established that she is lesbian - not once is it even hinted! Keep in mind that Albert Nobbs is not the ONLY character in the film who is cross-dressing. The film uses this rather unusual phenomenon at the time (women dressing as men to find work) to comment on various interesting issues, some social, and many more psychological.

For people who like what could be considered small stories (stories focussed around an individual) without any major overt excitement, this is a fine movie to watch. I usually don't care for Glenn Close but she does a wonderful job as does everyone else in the cast.

Typical gay promoting fare. The acting was good the ending dissappointing. I wish I had rented a drama.
