Description

After hearing Winslow Leach (William Finley) perform a song from his Faust rock opera, Phil Spector-ish impresario Swan (Paul Williams) decides that Winslow's opera would be the perfect debut attraction for his new rock palace, the Paradise. Swan steals the music and has Winslow imprisoned -- but not before Winslow meets aspiring songbird Phoenix (Jessica Harper). Jumping prison, Winslow breaks into Swan's Death Records factory to ruin the recordings, but a record press accident grossly disfigures him. Winslow then sneaks into the Paradise to sabotage Swan's show, disguising himself as the Phantom. Swan, however, cuts a deal with the Phantom to finish his cantata; he promises that Phoenix will sing it but then reneges, hiring prissy glam rocker Beef (Gerritt Graham). Determined to have Phoenix sing, the Phantom soon discovers just how far Swan will go to give the people what they want.

I absolutely loved this movie from the first time I saw it on TMC by accident. I was channel surfing and didn’t realize where I stopped at. When this movie came on I was enthralled. Bad acting and not so bad acting alike. I did some research afterwards and learned a few things on this and I found that this film and Rocky Horror where both movies that were not big hits at release in their home countries. This one is a cult favorite in Canada and Rocky Horror became the cult favorite in The States. I absolutely love this movie as much as I detest Rocky Horror. All my friends are into the latter and I cannot fathom why. You probably either like this film or can’t stand it. Oh, another couple of facts are that the music producer was a real big-time producer at the time. And the leading lady met her husband after he saw this film and called in some favors, he being a movie studio executive. She does have a charisma that shines through when she is singing. Even if she is lip-syncing her own overdubbed audio.

I saw this movie during the original theatrical release, and have owned in in various formats since.Have always been a fan.The Hd restoration is much better than I was expecting from a "niche" movie from the 70s.Viewed the HD download on latest 12.9" iPad Pro, using external Bose Companion 20 speakers:(the 2-speaker-with- puck setup.)Both picture and sound were much better than I thought possible, and certainly better than some of the theater showings I attended over the years. If you love this movie, the HD download is the way to see it!

A film that I can recite word for word. It takes me back to a much simpler time when stubbing your toe was a summertime right of passage. A must have movie!!!!!!

I used to watch this movie as kid, and after doing some research, I finally found it. Then the moment I found it on iTunes, I just had to buy it! It’s as beautiful as I remember, maybe even more. This has to be my all time favorite movie!
