  • 1st Generation Modern Techno Thriller

Loved the score and Rock Hudson gives a solid performance The movie was revolutionary in that the term techno-thriller had yet to be coined until 1984. I love Cold War thrillers, but it doesn’t hold up well against the Tom Clancy movies and novels which set a new bar for this genre by integrating tech with the plot. This is my reasons for 3 instead of 4 stars. This movie is more of a walk through of the best technology in 1968 and that’s where a lot of time is wasted when watching it from now looking back 50+ years. This movie was top of the line in 1968 and if you are into Cold War thrillers, this is a must see for it’s historical value to be sure. Also viewers younger than 45 may not recall how close we were to global nuclear destruction and this movie depends on the audience being aware of that.

...a bit boring and it is pretty clear that the actors were the second choice out of necessity. Good cast, interesting story (although the typical cold war story) but not really a highlight.
  • Strangest “good movie” I ever did see

Perhaps this has value to movie buffs but it is not on par with Guns Of Navarone or Where Eagles Dare. It was like a high school stage performance in my opinion but it probably has its place in archival history for some reason. I do not recommend it to the average movie viewer expecting a Longest Day type movie.

Probably ok if you like watching the neighbors plan pantomimes through the window and guess what they are doing. I have little tolerance for spending two and a half hours watching people do things that I have no idea why they're doing them. If I want to play guessing games, I'll play Trivial Pursuit. Even Clue makes more sense
  • Best Rock Hudson movie ever

Howard Hughes once bought a Las Vegas Television station just so they would show this movie 24/7 so he could watch it whenever he wanted. If I were that rich I might do the same thing. This is by far my favorite Rock Hudson movie. You see him at his most manly best in this film. He is the Captain of a US Sub that is under orders to go to the pole to rescue some scientists. He is also ordered to carry a "Mr. Jones" who is some kind of spy who has his own set of orders for this mission. There are some incredible scenes in this movie that you will love. My favorite is when a missile tube is sabotaged and the ship starts going down out of control and reaches hull crush depth. Incredibly realistic and exciting. If you love subs and spies then you will definately want to watch this movie.

Filmed in 1968 this was the time of the Cold War. The time when the USA and USSR were at odds for many reasons. The movie is about a SUB being sent to the Arctic and the "Spy" they have to carry their for some reason. Filmed with the latest technology in cameras and with the cooperation of the US Navy makes this realistic look at the time and the history. It is a classic thriller of the times and a class.

This is one of my favorite all male action/adventure films. There are fun performances by all of the leads, great cold war politics, decent special effects for the time and Rock Hudson having a great time. One of my favorite lines is "The the electric boat division is going to get a very nasty letter from the war department." On the downside there are no women and the casting is too white, but then it was the 60's. Enjoy.
