After reading The Old Man and the Sea, my class watched this film which closely follows the novella. The narratives helped my students grasp literary elements like theme and symbolism. Though I really like this film, it lacks quality special effects; however, this is understandable given that the film was made in 1958. I would love to see this film redone closely following Hemmingway's novella, but with up-to-date special effects and musical color. Still, the quality of the acting by Spencer Tracy and the beautiful scenery in many ways made up for the lack of quality special effects.

I've read the book and seen the movie. I think the movie was great and while I am not a big fan of Hemmingway, I do love Spencer Tracy and he does a masterful job of portraying the epic battle the fisherman carries on with the huge marlin. Best of all, get the audio book with Charleton Heston narrating. But see the movie first, then let Heston read you the book while the images are fresh and memorable. Heston gives the performance of his career, even though it is only verbal. You should not miss these performances. They are both very, very special.
