True artistry in every way. This story was everything my soul needed. The setting was gorgeous, and the performances were enchanting. This was one of the deepest love stories and explorations of the human heart that I've ever had the privilege watch. The Painted Veil (2006 film version) will go down as my favorite love story of all time.

This film was done beautifully! The story is about a marriage that starts to unravel after an infidelity. I expected that there would be a typical cheater (who I am supposed to dislike) and a typical forsaken spouse (for whom I am supposed to feel sorry). I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of both the husband AND wife as characters. Probably the result of good casting - Edward Norton and Naomi Watts were so convincing as the husband and wife that I forgot I was watching Edward Norton and Naomi Watts! I would recommend it, especially to people who enjoyed The English Patient because it has a similar feel.

This is an absolutely WONDERFUL film. It is a tale about infidelity, what causes it, what comes of it, and what can be solved in the wake of its victory. Beautifully and poignantly told, this movie is about a lonely and frail wife (Watts, in fine form as always) who begins to feel frustration with her husband and immerses herself in an affair (her lover is her real life husband!). She's quickly discovered, and ends up attending the location of a huge cholera epidemic. Through their dangerous settings, the two distraught spouses begin to patch up their relationship and find love. Never has this story been told as well, or as heartbreakingly. This film is in my top three, and is greatly overlooked despite its incredile and emotional feat of an ending. It is regal and elegant, and not a story for those who thrive off of veins of films like Bride Wars or Transformers. I heartily recommend this film, and hope you reach the conclusion I had about this film: despite veering off of the story portayed by Maugham, there is no denying this film is MAGNIFICENT!!!
