In 1984 - possibly when this was filmed - my girlfriend at the time wanted to see it. We went to the "Seattle Center" and experienced a Ballet that stayed with us forever! If you 'have to' see any Ballet - this is the one! I've seen other's - some 'dark' and others... Just different, but to me PNB's Nutcracker is the Iconic Verion of the ballet! Rent it, buy it - watch it with your girlfriend, your entire family! Make it a Christmas Tradition! This is about as close as you can come to seeing it - without actually going to Seattle, WA. Maybe you too - will love it as much as I do! Maybe you too will make the Trek to Pacific Northwest Ballet! We're in LA now, but I plan to take my wife 2014! Shhh! :)

I have been looking for this movie on anything but VHS forever and here it is! I am so excited that iTunes has it and at such a reasonable price. A great version of the Nutcracker, I highly recommended this for nostalgic purposes.

Every year I would take my daughter to PNB's Nutcracker as a Christmas gift. She's a professional dancer herself now, and has started taking HER daughter (my granddaughter) to the show now. I say that because we LOVE the show, and for the dance, this movie is still perfect. However, I was shocked by the lack of video quality. HORRIBLE! There are dust shadows, faded colours, dull focus, and film scratches making running lines on the screen reminiscent of watching an old 1950's film. This looks like a bootleg, like someone sat in the theatre and made it by using an old camcorder to videotape the movie screen. If the nostalgia look is O.K. for you and you love the ballet, then get this. If you are used to good quality and films that are clean and bright, do not waste your money on this. +5 stars for the excellent dance, but βˆ’2 for the low quality of the film equals a 3 star rating.

This film version of the Pacific Northwest Ballet's "Nutcracker" was not all that well received in 1986. "Too many cuts and too many close-ups for a dance film," the critics said -- and in all fairness there is a certain justification for this line of critique. However, as a visualization of Tchaikovsky's score and and an evocative retelling of E.T.A. Hoffmann's original story this movie is stunning. This is not really surprising considering the picture's artisitc pedigree: set and costume design by renowned children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak ("Where the Wild Things Are") and direction by the great Carroll Ballard ("The Black Stallion").

This is the only verison of Nutcracker that I would watch every year on tv. I had a feeling that all the other ones were not as good. I looked at other means of obtaining a copy of this and the only way is through iTunes. It is better than that other verison. I think this is the best production of the Nutcracker. I would watch the other one and it wasn't as great. I enjoyed this one every year on tv. I am pleased with the special effects and the execution of the storyline. Especially with all the characters.
