Spencer Tracy gives not only his best performance as an actor but one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema. The dialogue verbal as well as unspoken chemistry Spencer Tracy has with Fredrick March is a true movie lovers sweet dream. Keep in mind Spencer Tracy has given brilliant performances in many movies. Gene Kelly is absolutely deliscious as the reporter on the case. The way he taunts and annoys Fredrick March is classic! The most amazing feat of this true american masterpiece is Mr. Fredricks March's spot on perfect performance! Fredrick March, in this writers opinion, Gives a bravura performance that can never be matched!! Sure there are roles that may showcase more ability for an actor but what Mr. March did is totally brilliant! It is rare that someone of Spencer Tracy's genius can be made better by the ability of a peer but in this case Fredrick March makes Inherit the Wind the greatest showcase of dialogues ever in the history of cinema. Watch this movie and marvel, March and Tracy show all thespians everywhere what true dialogue really is!!!! ONe of the top movies ever made.....
  • Based on truth . . . Excellent in many ways

This movie is based on the State of Tennessee vs. John T. Scopes that has been dubbed the "Monkey Trail". There are many liberties taken to move the story along. However, this movie isn't just about the Butler Act of 1925 and Scopes (he turned himself in) for teaching Darwin, but it is how the old and new South ideals clashed, the evangelicalism (Victorianism) vs. modernism (in this case science). However this movie is also based on McCarthyism, which was occurring in the 1950s/1960s. Furthermore, I feel that black & white helps make the scenes in the court trail more dramatic.
  • Not historically accurate

After watching this movie I quickly double checked the facts of the actual Scopes Trial. How unfortunate for those who believe this is how it all happened. The movie is filled with the same old cliches against Christians: close-minded, anti scientific rubes that are prone to violence when their world is changed. The movie was intended to be a critique of McCarthy and his witch hunts, but inept or lazy viewers will see this as THE definitive retelling of a trial set up by the ACLU to change state laws: that evolution could not be taught in a public school classroom. The acting is pretty good, and the courtroom scenes can be interesting. Still, I wouldn't watch it again and would not recommend it to anyone. If you do see, keep in mind it is VERY LOOSELY based on the real events.
  • View only if you enjoy drama

View this movie only if you are very fond of drama. While others are raving about the acting, I disagree. The acting is impassioned because the parts are impassioned. There is some overacting that is noticeable and annoying but not β€œB” movie excessive. While the film is loosely based on the 1925 Scopes trial if you are getting this film for its historical content don’t, it is not even close to being accurate, if you want to study the trial get a copy of the court transcripts. If the writers had to make a movie of the trial they would have done better making a comedic lampoon of the trial rather than a dramatization, they seem to try and force a point but it just never quite gets there. Their bigotry does come across but that is expected. If you truly enjoy drama and have nothing better to do, or spend your money on then enjoy, but you would probably do well searching around a bit more.
