Description

Carol (Blythe Danner) finds the everyday activities that have given her life structure – her regular bridge game, gardening, a glass of wine or two – have lost their luster. With the help of her three quirky girlfriends (June Squibb, Rhea Perlman, and Mary Kay Place), Carol decides to seek out new experiences and find love in places she never expected. Also starring Sam Elliot and Martin Starr, this is a vibrant and heartfelt film that critics are calling “elegant, funny and entirely engaging!” – Associated Press

  • Painful

The pace of this film is brutal (in a very slow kind of way). Nothing remarkable whatsoever. The Tomatometer failed us miserably on this one. No need to rent if you have some paint that's drying or a glass of water you can watch evaporate. Sometimes, the truth hurts.

Very subtle, yet succinct and poignant. Endearing and charming. I works on a deeper emotional level. Fresh and sweet. Must see, if you like quality films (not a lot out there.)

I can see why some viewers gave this film high ratings; those who appreciate sloggy attempts at cinematic sentimentality fell for it. In my opinion, though, it never really did anything - VERY disjointed. The fact that the screenplay was written in 2 weeks, and the film was shot in 18 days should be a source of embarrassment, not pride. There were about three good lines, and the group of lady-friends had so much potential, but it was squandered. Rhea Perlman was the only funny one, and I think it just comes naturally to her. Blythe Danner, to me, just seems as if she couldn't act her way through a high school production. And the pool guy? What a schmuck! Sam Elliot is suave, gorgeous, and has "stage presence." He gets 5 stars; the film, 1. The wrong person died at the end.

Really, really liked this movie. It’s a wonderful story about life and death - and how to move on from loss and sadness. Touches all the senses, makes you laugh and cry. Very smart movie, and the ending is especially sweet. Highly recommend this movie to everyone.

This was a good movie, but you probably need to be over 50 to really get it Strong acting performances by everyone. Don't rent it expecting a comedy though

Good watch for folks in a particular generation (frankly mine). I've been a Sam fan for quite a while, he finally does a romance, and his time in the film is WAAAAAYYY too short. It's worth viewing, it's enjoyable to watch, but would have been even better if it had more screen time for Sam Elliott. Hope he makes another one of these!

I really loved this movie. It was unexpected and beautiful. I'm not quit sure it's a comedy, however, so if you are going into watching it for a million laughs, you aren't going to find them. It has comedic touches, but the basic story is quite serious. A+ for Blythe Danner and Sam Elliot. Loved it all.
