Description

On a sweltering Texas summer night in 1989, husband and father Richard Dane (Dexter's Michael C. Hall) awakens to the sound of a burglar breaking into his home. In a panic, he shoots the intruder dead—but this nightmare is only just beginning. Although he's hailed as a small-town hero, Dane soon finds himself fearing for his family's safety when the burglar's ex-con father, Ben (Sam Shepard), rolls into town; hell-bent on revenge. However, not all is as it seems. Misled by the cops and desperate for answers, Richard embarks on an increasingly berserk, bloodstained quest to discover what really happened that night. The plot twists pile up faster than the body count in this blistering mystery of vengeance and vice, directed by Jim Mickle (Stake Land, We Are What We Are) with scene-stealing performances from Sam Shepard and Don Johnson as a pair of Texan badasses. Based on the novel by Joe R. Lansdale.

What a gem! 'Cold in July' is a film lover's guilty pleasure. The acting from Michael C Hall, Don Johnson, and Sam Shepherd is nothing short of exemplary. The cinematography, score and writing are all top shelf. Ok... I keep seeing people complain about plot holes, here's my two cents, take it or leave it but life is full of plot holes. Now I understand that in film measures can be taken to correct this but I feel that any plot holes in this film were left on purpose by the film makers. I did not see plot holes, I saw incidents which were left open to interpretation, and you know what, I appreciate that, when it's done right. I don't want everything spelled out for me, I like a bit of mystery, a bit of unknown, because that's how life is, not everything is spelled out for you in black-and-white. This is an excellent film! A truly unique thriller!
  • Not bad, but...

First, this is not a horror movie, nor is it a thriller. It’s more of a mystery/suspense, with a bit of character study thrown in. I found it quite suspenseful in the beginning and it kept my attention throughout, but the ending didn’t seem logical.

Right out of the starting gate this movie is outstanding and worth the money and time! Acting from Michael Hall was GREAT and it was really good to see Don Johnson. Had a great twist that was not expected. Loved it...hold on for a great ride.

Starts good but takes a hard conspicuous turn and goes downhill. Almost turned it off, regretted that I didn't.

Everything from the minim mullet, to the film score right out of an 80’s thriller simply just works. It’s an odd story that takes an odd turn, and then trails off in a direction you just don’t expect. How often can you say that about a film? It goes in a direction you don’t expect and it’s good. Almost freaking never. I really enjoyed Stakeland, and now I think I can count Jim Mickle among the filmmakers I look out for.
  • yeah, this is a Lansdale tale all right.....

Wasn't really sure what to make of this as it unfolded but stick with it and it becomes quite impressive little movie, I just really enjoyed all the actors, perfect noir'ish southern nightmare, what starts as a home robbery crime and what happens after that you'll have to see for yourself but it unfolds into some exciting, memorable movie viewing. I enjoy the directors other movies for the most part. Michael Hall is so perfect for this movie and seeing Don Johnson back at it is always a hoot, he really good in this but Sam Shepard is this quiet bomb, music is strange but the late 80's in which this movie takes place was all the place. Did I hear the great bluesy country singer Kasey Lansdale voice somewhere in there!! I will have to see this again to take in all the little touches of this dark little noirmare......

Starts off as a low rent Cape Fear but then takes a twist. The twist is interesting for about ten minutes but then gets pretty stupid and boring. Good thing great old timey actors are on hand to make it all bearable. Not a bad movie but not really that great.
