Description

James McAvoy plays Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson, a scheming, manipulative, misanthropic man who spends his time indulging in drugs, alcohol, sexually abusive relationships, and "the games" – cruel plots and systematic bullying of his coworkers and friends. While working on the murder case of a Japanese student, he starts coming unhinged, slowly losing his grip on reality and suffering from a series of increasingly severe hallucinations as he desperately tries to hold his life together.

A 97-minute bender with a tab that’s about to close on a troubled soul, where pacing run paramount to normal plot trajectory. Strong lead performance keeps it from sinking into mediocrity.

Easily his best performance, you may need subtitles at times, just a warning, not really a comedy, more of a dark tragedy laced with bits of humor, worth a watch.

It wasn't as horrendous as some of the people here say neither a masterpiece. Very similar to trainspotting, but with less likeable characters and rythim. Entertaining, but not worth watching again.

I have already watched this movie ten times but I still yearn to enjoy this movie. This strange piece touches and consoles wounded souls in a very peculiar way.
  • Could be Mcavoy's most realized performance to date

I went into Filth not really knowing what to expect. I saw that James Mcavoy was in it so I knew it wouldn't be awful (his phenomenal acting has supported many subpar films.) The first 3 minutes of the film and I was shocked. The overt sexual nature of this film is something that I haven't seen in film ever. Literally every 5 minutes or so there is a sex scene. It doesn't take long to realize that main character Bruce is a complete and utter sadist. That being said, Mcavoy's portrayal of this selfish, damaged character left me completely subdued into pity for the man. Halfway through the film viewers are entertained with harrowing scenes of drug abuse and moments of borderline personality disorder, complete with numerous tearful performances delivered flawlessly once again, by Mcavoy. All in all, I enjoyed this movie for what its worth. Is it the best movie I've ever seen? Not at all. There were definitely a few slow moments and unnecessary side-plots. But by the end of this film, you will be misty-eyed. And you'll be thinking about this film for days afterward. And you may want to pray after (I felt very dirty having viewed this. The title says it all.)

Irreverent, violent, obscene, and twisted. These words define Filth. This psychological thriller, written and directed by Jon S. Baird, tells the story of Bruce Robertson, a corrupt detective aching to get a promotion as detective inspector. Hallucinatory drugs, womanizing, and brutal violence are all a part of his rise to the top. The dramatic, dark comedy is one of the best movies of 2013. The blend of demented imagery and clever dialogue create a unique atmosphere for one of the most imaginative movies we have ever seen. James McAvoy’s performance in the leading role of Filth is captivating and makes you forget that he is an actor playing a character. Filth will make you laugh, jump, cry, scream, and ask, “What the heck is happening?” Overall, we enjoyed all of the twists and turns of this Scottish film and would recommend it to anyone looking for something different.
  • Incredibly dark character study

The best movie I can relate Filth to is Confessions of a Dangerous mind. If you loved that movie then you'll really like Filth but if you hated Confessions that you'll probably hate Filth as well. Although there is definitely a comedic edge to this film, it's primarily, I think, I character study about an extremely twisted individual. It's an increasingly bleak, dark film, but a fascinating and memorable one to watch if you enjoy dark movies and character studies. It's also anchored by a stunning James Mcavoy performance. He is truly Oscar-worthy in this film and delivers what may be the best performance of his career thus far.

Filth is definitely not for everyone. I’m sure some people will hate this movie because of the profane amount of vulgarity and nihilism being portrayed throughout the runtime. Certain xenophobic audience members will scoff and dismiss this film because they will be helpless to decipher the mountains of dialogue being conveyed through a heavy, Scottish accent. But a select few will love this film. They will love James McAvoy’s mesmerizing, demented, and awe-inspiring performance as Det. Bruce Robertson. His inspired, brave portrayal should have earned him an Oscar in 2013, and the fact that he lost to McConaughey was an abomination. Although he deserved the Oscar for Best Actor, even that accolade wouldn’t properly encapsulate the sheer magnitude of having bore witness to McAvoy achieving the actor’s holy grail: Transcendence through character. Another interesting aspect of Filth is the dichotomy inherent in the fact that the film subscribes to several genres as it progresses, and can’t be labeled as any one single genre. Scenes fluctuate from light and silly to outrageous and darkly comedic and then there are powerful, sobering, and brutal scenes that depict the struggles of people suffering from mental illness and addiction. I’ve never seen anything like it, and the term "instant classic” sums it up nicely . Sheer brilliance, laddy!!
