Description

Laurel & Hardy, one of the world’s greatest comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As the charm and beauty of their performances shines through, they re-connect with their adoring fans. Even as the tour becomes a hit, Stan & Ollie can’t quite shake the specter of Laurel & Hardy’s past; the long-buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver’s failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages, they are aware that they may be approaching their swan song, trying to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.

As a fan I was very nervous about this movie. Although the trailer was well done - I knew that might be a false positive. Thankfully, my trepidations were unwarranted. I was gratefully entertained to the last frame. Thank you to Join Baird for a time capsule view into this world. Coogan and Reilly were not in this film - they became Stan & Ollie. Henderson and Arianda gave us stolen moments of great comedy timing and great acting. Outstanding performances! If you are a fan, dive in to this film and let go. You will be happy you did. Just finished watching Stan and Ollie - one of the best films i've seen in a LONG time. I laughed, I cried like a baby - it's just pure joy and the performances really captured Laurel and Hardy without EVER feeling like imitations - you get lost and it feels like it's actually them. 10/10 - HIGHLY recommended.

Wow an actual movie about real people! I'm so bored of the juvenile comic book adaptations it's shocking when something is released designed to appeal to adults. Great, great film. Amazing acting and the sets are spot on.

I’ve always been a fan of Laurel and Hardy, so when I noticed the movie Stan & Ollie on iTunes, I downloaded it to watch on a flight yesterday. I was a little apprehensive about John C. Reilly playing Hardy. I’ve only seen him in silly comedies in the past and questioned his range for this role. I shouldn’t have been worried, he transformed himself into Oliver Hardy. I’ve only seen Steve Coogan in a few roles, but he was equally impressive as Stan Laurel. The movie captured the period perfectly and had me totally immersed in the film. I knew very little of their personal lives or history, so seeing behind the scenes was enlightening. Their relationship had been strained when Laurel wanted to break away from Hal Roach studios and left, but Hardy was still under contract and was forced into making another movie without Stan. Most of the movie revolves around a personal tour they made in the United Kingdom sixteen years after their breakup in hopes of a movie comeback. Them coming back together after all those years was touching and poignant. Also, the interactions between their wives was a delight. I highly recommend this film to anyone who remembers the comedy team fondly.

I was lucky enough to have parents and older siblings introduce me to great comedy legends like, Groucho Marx, The Three Stooges, and Laurel & Hardy. Because they were so unique and talented it is inevitable that any portrayal of these great comedians will be a disappointment. This is one of the rare exceptions! Both actors delievered believable performances. The story was heartflelt and respected the memory of this amazing men! So happy to see this movie!

I do get tired of stories of entertainers whose back stage lives tank as they eat lunch at 5 star hotels.

Did not know what to expect from this movie....it was amazing and very heartwarming film. Both Reilly and Coogan did an amazing job in portraying these two great comedians. I actually thought they were the real thing...It was also emotionally moving..Well done! Highly recommended.
