Description

Set over the course of a weekend tournament for chess software programmers thirty-some years ago, COMPUTER CHESS transports viewers to a nostalgic moment when the contest between technology and the human spirit seemed a little more up for grabs. We get to know the eccentric geniuses possessed with the vision to teach a metal box to defeat man, literally, at his own game, laying the groundwork for artificial intelligence as we know it and will come to know it in the future.

A huge huge leap for Andrew Bujalski

I loved computers when they were in the hands of hobbyists, and this movie is a tribute to that long-gone era. Everything about the movie is pitch-perfect, from the video, to the computers, to the nerdy language and behavior. A couple of tips-of-the-cap to "2001: A Space Odyssey": the Pet computer eyes the programmers, like Hal eyeing the astronauts, and the fetus in the womb echoing the giant newborn at the end of "2001." I think you have to be older, like me, to appreciate the fact that one was once able to place a Mac file ANYWHERE on one's hard drive....

This movie is visually bad on purpose so don't waste your money on the HD version. It's boring and not funny. I say this as a programmer.

Warning ! This is not even a movie, it's a bad performance art project masquerading as a bad movie. Don't waste your time! Seriously this is bad! Just because there's no storyline doesn't mean it has a story line. Let's throw in some cats, what the hell, that will look arty and edgy. Here's some advices or people who I hope never attempt this again. Pick a direction! Good god this was bad!
  • Amazing film!

This is one of the most original films I have seen in years. The characters are well written and the acting is astounding. The subject is not as it seems and is in fact much deeper on a humanistic level. Nothing about this film is commercial. Unfortunately, that's why films like this never get any notoriety.

"Geeks gone wild...A lot of nerdy and a lot of weird." - Michael Calore, WIRED "An astonishing new film...Recreates the excitement and strangeness of the early days of personal computing." - Richard Brody, The New Yorker “…the funniest, headiest, most playfully eccentric American indie of the year…” — Village Voice “Geeks gone wild...” — WIRED “Hilarious and brilliant.....a new Dr. Strangelove.” — Accréds “Nothing else could better illustrate the virtues of unalloyed improvisational weirdness. Mr. Bujalski is up to something new in this unique comedy.” — The Wall Street Journal “An endearingly nutty, proudly analog tribute to the ultra-nerdy innovators of yesteryear.” — Variety

omg this is awful. That said, the acting is mostly top notch and it has some laughs – but in the end it can't make up for a mercilessly boring 2hrs (although it felt more like 3).
  • Interesting ....

If you're looking for a movie about the history of computer Chess, keep looking, This movie reminds me of the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - without the electro-shock therapy.

Excellent movie! Best I've seen in years. Captured the sights & sounds of the era perfectly including the sole woman among the men. They were truly geniuses then with all their eccentric ways. See it
