Description

Set in 1920s colonial Indochina, a pretty, virginal French teenager (Jane March) meets a handsome Chinese playboy (Tony Leung Ka Fai) from a respectable family. Going against the conventions of their respective societies, the lustful pair begin a torrid affair in a seedy Saigon neighborhood. Their strong attraction towards one another is only intensified by the illicit nature of their rendezvous. Given such circumstances, can their relationship last? An erotic cult classic lauded and derided in equal measure... decide for yourself

One of the best movies that I have sent that subtlely tells the era with the key individuals with the social mores at the time balancing circumstances imposed, created, or otherwise. Unsentimental in its lead female character, the girl's immaturity leads to actually a more profound understanding of her and her lover.

Two people of different age, social-economical status, race come together by chance. A sad love story.

This romantic movie hits all the right notes. It is a bit Lolita- young seductress type female falls for older refined gentleman. The difference is that this is set in Saigon- in 1920. It has all the flair of an asian foreign film as well as a french film. March is ideal as the young girl who knows the power she has over him sexually and the "chinaman" is perfect in his willingness to give up his power to her. It is a beautiful piece of filmography that really is in the same vein as Original Sin and Body Heat.

...visually, sensually and poetically. I am so glad iTunes finally got around to offering this wonderful film. I don't agree with the pro critics at all. It is beautifully meshed with subtle use of symbolism and foreshadow. The coming of age of this girl during this period was so delicately and tastefully directed. And the futility of her lover's existence is a wonderful contrast to the turmoil of her own life. Maybe splendid movie that I have watched many time...like the book, well worth revisiting time and again. Enjoy!

There are loves which are like music playing in the background of entire life. The notes you hear cut intricate patterns in your heart and determine the future. To learn about love is to suffer. The Lover touches you in the most intimate place and creates unfailing dream. Great movie.
