I saw this movie when it first came out and it was a big thrill to those still hungry for scientific realism after seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey in the late 1960s, not to mention those hungry for a better look at Rae Dawn Chong. Propelled by Donald Johanson's discovery of Lucy (australopithecus afarensis) in 1974, Paleoanthropology went through a golden age in the wake of this movie during which our understanding of early humans has pretty much left it in the dust. For one thing, a setting 80,000 years ago is almost twice as far in the past as the Cro-Magnon Oase 1 find, which is the oldest definitely dated European Early Modern Humans (EEMH) specimen according to Wikipedia, yet the more advanced characters in this film had languages, tools and weapons that only modern humans would have had. Setting dates aside, one would have to assume that Everett McGill and his clan were Neanderthals while Rae Dawn Chong and her clan were extremely early CroMagnons. I think the 1981 human bias is also evident in the representation of the first group of these characters as creatures held captive by their instincts and emotions - unkempt, dirty and inefficient. I should think that on the contrary, heads must have been cooler and more calculating as one goes back in time, commensurate with the harsh selection pressures that would have favored their survival and prevalence. Other than that it was a great view into the distant past refreshingly free of creationism and Late Roman Era theology. If you can forgive the portrayal of species who in life had long since mastered their environment as helpless against wild beasts, the elements and their own emotions then I think it will give you some perspective on who we are and where we came from.

I saw this film in the theaters when I was a teenager. It had a great impact on me then, and an equally powerful impact on me now. This film is simply outstanding in so many areas. It is well worth watching. Without giving away anything, the sequence of "enlightenment" and the actor's reaction to the events as they unfold evokes such an emotional response in the viewer, I had to watch it more than one time. Again, simply outstanding.

A movie to remember. Excellent cast with a story that doesn't need words to understand. I went to the theaters to see this movie over 27 years ago, and it still leaves me in "AWW". If you have any interest in pre-historic man, this move will take you, and make you a part of the time some 80,000 years ago.

If pre historic peoples such as Neanderthals and cro magnums interest you, I believe you will find this movie very entertaining. The characters were interesting and did a very good job acting the parts of the primitive people they portrayed. It is a beautiful story all in all.

The drama and the romantic aspects were often forced and the historical accuracy was questionable. The lack of any actual language made this movie hard to follow. While the premise of the movie is as good an idea as Jack London's "To Build a Fire", the execution was poor and the desperate need for survival was often left behind.

Don't let the 1981 release throw you, this movie is a one of a kind. It's often funny and the actors did an absolutely amazing job bringing to life our early prehistory. Highly recommended!
