The Kid With a Bike

Just a strange movie. It's not a light-hearted movie as the cover photo would suggest. Get ready for dark and depressing.

I am shocked that Rotten Tomatoes gave this a 96%! Really, it has potential, but moves too slow and the end leaves you hanging… it was disappointing and left me thinking, "This is a very poor ending!" iTunes, this movie should rent for 99 cents.

Cyril, a young red headed kid, has a dad who has lost all of his backbone, any notion of generous love, and, evidently, his waxed surf board. He simply walks away: "Don't call me, I'm starting over". Cyril has the drive, insistence, and determination of a pit bull...to be loved. By his dad...by the local drug thug...but not by the woman that, by pure random chance, Cyril has actually chosen to be his new mother. The kid on the bike takes a while to find his way home....but it's a tough, sweet, well-earned homecoming.

What an inspiring movie about the human spirit. If a child is abandoned by his only parent- his father- without any word or explanation- how can a child's heart ever recover? How can a child love himself if he feels like he isn't loved by his parents? This movie invites us into the troubled mind of a young boy who has to go through stages to make sense of being abandoned - and how he makes choices, some good, but others terrible- to find a way to go on living. A kind hairdresser happens to be at the right place and time to witness the heart wrenching emotional reaction the boy in denial has when given proof that his dad is really gone- even stooping so low as to sell his son's beloved bike for money. The hairdresser can't help but try to make life better for the boy, and continues by doing some random acts of kindness for the boy. The boy might not want this lady to care for him, perhaps since he doesn't feel like he is worthy, after all his dad didn't think he was. This story brings us along as the hairdresser becomes the only person the boy can trust to love him- and allows us to hurt with him as he tests this love - after all she might leave too. You have to watch the movie to understand how much you care that the boy ends up okay- and with hope for a happy life for himself. In several very affecting scenes we feel the pain of this boy as he rides, silently and lost in thought, on his bike down the streets of the town. Sometimes the hardest times in a persons life happen when one is deep in thought, or experiencing intense grief and utter dismay. As this wounded boy rides the streets on his bike, alone, silently battling the anger and sadness over the circumstances of his life , we feel the depth of his hurt." A Boy and His Bike " tells a story of sadness, hurt , self hatred, and the journey back from the dark side of the heart.
