Description

It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

This Film without a doubt, goes in my top 10 personal favorite movies off all time. When it comes to WW2 Movies I’m in awe. If you know, you know. It’s lengthy but you don’t wanna miss a second! If you like Submarine films or even authentic World War II films, You MUST check this one out. You won’t be disappointed! If only they would remaster & release in 4K HDR !!!! “Hint hint”

Das Boot provides an accurate depiction of the state of things with German submariners in the autumn of 1941, at the point when things are starting to turn for the worse. They are disillusioned with the regime and are doing their best to survive under truly gruelling conditions. Once you get past the subtitles, you forget about what side they are on, as you are drawn into the story almost as if you are one of the crew. NOTE: the English subtitles are burned into the film, so you need to turn CC off. This film is a true masterpiece. Fortunately, it gave Jurgen Prochnow the profile that brought him to Hollywood, but he is not the only stand-out among this cast. I recommend this film to anyone who has an interest in World War II and submarines in particular. It is far from the sterile depictions in films such as Crimson Tide and far more gritty than any other classic submarine film ever made. Also note that this is the director's cut and is a full three and a half hours long, so you would have to plan a night around it. MY GRIPE: The main actors are all bilingual. Because of the terrible accoustics of the sets, all dialogue was dubbed in later by the actors themselves. And they dubbed themselves in BOTH German and English. So why is this the German version? Ignorance, I assume.
  • This is not the directors cut

Why this is labeled as the directors cut I do not know. This is the theatrical 209 minute release not the 293 minute directors cut. It’s still a good movie obviously but this is either mislabeled or deliberate false advertising from iTunes

Make shure to get the six hours long original version. It’s so worth it.
  • Great film, but we need theatrical release, iTunes.

Don’t get me wrong. The greatest submarine film ever, but it’s overly long when you want to just see the original Oscar winner. The theatrical version is much much shorter and no impact of the Director’s Cut is lost as much of added footage is while still in port. Please, iTunes... give us the original. You give us unrated or extended versions of subpar films, so why not the original legendary masterpiece? Waiting patiently for many years so far. It’s 2020. 2 1/2 hours is the perfect length.
  • The best and most intelligent war movie

Usually the cuts are justified and no reason to add them. Usually the cuts are stupid
  • Amazing achievement

One of the greatest war films ever made. Pay attenttion to the way Petersen's camera tears through the sub thrughout the film. The sense of claustrophobia is imminent. The closest you'll get to being on a U-boat during the seocnd World War. A must see.
