Description

From the director of The Joy Luck Club, and based on the best-selling novel, comes a timeless portrait of female friendship. Centuries ago, two “sworn sisters” are isolated by their families, but stay connected through a secret language written in the folds of a white silk fan. Now in modern-day Shanghai, their descendents must draw inspiration from the past as they struggle to maintain their own eternal bond in the face of life’s complications. What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope and friendship.

This is a touching story of two best friends who are bonded by a deep friendship. The movie portrays how close two friends can be and the sacrifices they make for each other's sake. Also, it's not completely true that the movie is all in English; the actresses and actors speak English when appropriate it is in the plot and Chinese when it fits (Chinese in the past and English/Chinese in the present).

Great movie ,great play ,good actresses . I agree in a way it's might be a "woman" movie ,but I enjoyed the story and the idea of mixing an ancient times of China with the modern every day life .

The plot was wonderful. A bit confusing at first but it makes sense in time.

I'll preface this by saying that I don't feel compelled to write many reviews, but this movie inspired me to. If you've read the book, you have to try and seperate the two in your mind. if you are able to do so, and approach the movie as an entity unto itself, then you will find it deeply moving as well as introspective. if, however, you've read the book, and expect this to be a visual depiction of the novel as it was written, you may be disappointed. it does gloss over alot of the events in the book which made the book so special, but if it didn't, the movie would need to be a miniseries. What it does instead is to make the novel relevant to modern women without them even noticing until they find themselves sitting in their living rooms shocked into silence and desperately missing their old sames, and it does so seamlessly. The only reason I give it 4/5 stars is because I was so in love with the book that i did miss some of the events they left out, as well as some of the characters. That being said, I'm about to watch it again, and I very rarely watch a movie twice in one day. I'm impressed.

I expected this movie to be in Chinese with English subtitles. Strangely, even though the entire movie takes place in China, there are many scenes in English. Why? Just to reach a larger audience, because many American people don't want to read subtitles? The story jumps annoyingly from present to past and back again. I didn't find the modern day friendship very interesting. I think it would have been better if they focused the movie on the past. Also, the "friendship" touted in the description is misleading. The women are obviously attracted to each other as is shown in more than one scene, especially toward the end. This story thus seems to be more about forbidden passion than a true friendship between the women.
  • Easily the best movie I've seen....

This movie is soo sad but hopeful in the end. One takes for granted the bond and love of a sister.
