Description

The latest film from iconoclastic independent filmmaker Gregg Araki, KABOOM is a hyper-stylized ”Twin Peaks” for the Coachella Generation, featuring a gorgeous young cast. A wild, witty and sex-drenched horror-comedy thriller, KABOOM tells the story of Smith (Thomas Dekker), an ambisexual 18-year-old college freshman who stumbles upon a monstrous conspiracy in a seemingly idyllic Southern California seaside town. KABOOM shares key touchstones of Araki’s early films, including scatological and absurd Valley-inflected dialogue, elements of campy gore and Araki’s troupe of arrestingly sexy guys and girls. With his sophisticated synthesis of various experiments in tone and cinematography, Araki has reached a new level of artistic maturity.

I did enjoy "The Living End" which iTunes should just go ahead and let me buy here... One thing I noticed between "The Living End" and "Kaboom" one is that, There are at least 3 Characters from the same Template in each movie. The Reserved Brunette Gay Guy, His Best Girlfriend Artist, and the Blonde Surfer Hottie with questionable moral values... Although in This movie, the Girl is a Lesbian in a bad relationship with a Witch, and the Surfer Guy is his straight Roommate instead of the crazed love interest, and he is a college student struggling with identity issues instead of AIDS. .. I kept waiting for the point to happen. Turns out, there isn't one. This movie requires a bit more of your "willing suspension of disbelief" than one might be willing to give, and eventually leads you down a rabbit hole you're not even sure was worth crawling down... What is painfully obvious by the end of the movie is that Araki had no idea how to end it, so he just gave up and said "F*** it!" and Blew the World Up Because that's the only way we were ever going to get off this merry-go-round of madness...

This movie was a lot of fun! Sexy actors, fun dialog, a bizarre story that is just coming together and kaboom! Spoiler Alert! So the ending was really off putting when I first saw it because everything was just starting to come together and get even more sci-fi cool when some fat white guy just ends it all with the push of a button. A day or two later I got to thinking that's really how life is, all our "important" plans could be ended in a heart beat by some old fat guy with a big red button. Sad and funny, mostly sad.
