Description

On November 29, 2002, one year after the passing of George Harrison, Olivia Harrison and longtime friend Eric Clapton organised a performance tribute in his honour. His closest friends gathered at London’s Royal Albert Hall to celebrate his life in the only way they knew how – by playing his music. The momentous evening featured George's songs, and music he loved, performed by a lineup that included Clapton, Jools Holland, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Monty Python, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Ringo Starr, Dhani Harrison and many more.   Directed by David Leland (Wish You Were Here, HBO’s Band Of Brothers and the Traveling Wilburys video “Handle With Care”), the Grammy® Award-winning CONCERT FOR GEORGE captures stunning renditions of some of the most significant music of the 20th century, including “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (featuring Clapton on guitar, McCartney on piano and Starr on drums), “Taxman” (performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and “The Inner Light” (covered by Jeff Lynne and Anoushka Shankar). Lynne, Harrison’s longtime friend and collaborator, produced the audio elements of the concert, while Clapton oversaw the entire proceedings as Musical Director.

I own the DVD and watched the concert on PBS years ago with my Mum. She bought this and it has a plethora of great musicians from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s(grew up with Tom Petty music)! George’s son Dhani also plays his Dad’s guitar on stage and sounds incredibly like him! If you don’t own this get it! To this day I’ll still watch this concert. God bless ya George! My fav Beatle next to Paul and Ringo! John L: aight. Miss him too.

Liked the second half with his songs. Do not like Sitar music. And what was the Monty Python point? Not worth the $20. Would rather download my favorites from you tube.
  • It’s good, but there is a better tribute show

I would love to have a copy of the tribute show that was arranged by his son, that took place at the Fonda theater in Los Angeles. It seemed so much more heartfelt, as it included so many more artists who were inspired by George. And it was much more a celebration of his life and spirit, than the memorial feeling of this show. I was moved by those performances, whereas this kind of felt more like an obligation at times.
  • Wonderful - and heartbreaking

You can see from the tributes and how their voices break when they talk about him, that George was and is a massive influence to all the artists in this tribute. Eric did a fantastic job of honouring his friend, and is joined by so many great musicians - Joe Brown and Billy Preston really do justice to the words and music. EC shows Paul McCartney how 'Something' should be done. Be prepared to break down when Joe sings 'I'll See You In My Dreams" and EC puts his arm around Dhani. It gets me every single time. We all miss you, George.

The first 1/3 of the concert features music from India. I wasn't so crazy about that . . . The final 2/3 of the concert are performances of many of George's hits done by top-notch musicians! When Ringo Starr & Paul McCartney come on towards the end of the show, they bring down the house. George's son is a spitting image of his father! To see him playing with Paul & Ringo was a real treat! I listened to this on my iPad 3 with Bose headphones. GREAT audio and video!!!

Probably one of the best produced rock videos ever. Definitely the best posthumous tribute to a rock musician, in my opinion. The feeling on the stage for George and his music was so palpable. "What a band and what a night ", to quote Ringo. .... and "here he [George] is, entertaining us, once again" - in the words of Jim Keltner. Music = Love!!
