  • iTunes Extras and 4K needed

Awesome movie about the Battle of Gettysburg, but can you please add the Special Features and iTunes Extras and also upgrade to 4K so people can watch them online? Also, can you merge the theatrical and extended versions together in one set? This is really annoying to me when the Special Features appear on the Home Video releases of movies, but not on iTunes because technology is advancing everyday.

This is an epic movie about one of the darkest times in American history. I can’t stand people that want to erase history, because they don’t like it.

Overall, this is a good movie but every fifteen minutes the whole thing stops while someone gives thei soliloquy – deep, pondering, meandering and important. No doubt the actors loved it, the movie keeps stopping again and again. One interesting thing is you get to see what Martin Sheen would look like if he was an Ewok. All that aside, in the places where it is good, it's good. Frankly, if they were to cut out everything except Jeff Daniels' portions of the story, that in itself would make a great movie (sans Daniels soliloquy, of course).
  • A pleasing nod to the genre

Giving to the fact there are cinematic limitations in telling such an epic event I feel Gettsyburg an honest effort. The positive and negative have been well documented in previous reviews so I will not go on in length. The movie “tries” to share the sheer scope of a major Civil War battle and it gets there, mostly. Authenticity barring a few minor annoyances puts anything you may view on the so called “History” channel to utter shame. The actors did a fine job and were not distracting. And, the battle scenes and combat were pleasing odes to the disciplined lines of battle of the day.. In short, while bayonet charges were ordered for tactical concerns it was refreshing to see Gettysburg resist the hollywood love affair with the ALWAYS inappropriate Braveheartesque mindless charge and equally mindless resulting melee that followed. I truly enjoyed this movie..
  • Confederate Flag?

Apple is removing GAMES with the Confederate Flag, but they apparently missed this movie which has LOTS of Confederate flags in it. Or is it this is a great revenue stream than a “silly” game? Come on Apple — do it all or not at all. For the record, the whole PC thing is SILLY. Flags don’t kill people.
  • Epic Amateurism

I've never understood the high regard in which this movie seems to be held. It's not as bad and phony as "Gods and Generals," but it ain't good. It's epic in scale and long as your life, yet terribly amateurish on almost every level. The problems start with the clunky writing, filled with stiff and unnatural dialogue and pausing every few minutes for another This Is An Historic Moment speech. Given the awful dialogue it's no wonder some usually good actors, like Sheen and Elliott, are just dreadful here. I've never seen Elliott worse, and Sheen's Robert E. Lee sounds unnervingly like Truman Capote. Then there's the laughably fake beards they're all wearing. It looks like a junior high school theater department did their make-up. It looks less like they're waiting for battle than Waiting For Guffman. That couldn't have helped the acting. The hordes of Civil War re-enactors don't add to any sense of realism either, especially all the slow, pot-bellied ones, who make the battle scenes look really phony. The This Is History music is awful. And boy could it use some editing. It's a four-hour movie that could easily have been cut in half just by ditching dozens of boring speeches and stilted Basil Exposition conversations. I give it 2 stars just for the great effort that must have gone into marching all the hordes of re-enactors around the actual landscape.

It is an incredible movie! And it never focuses on just one side. It gives you both points of view.

This movie in not accurate with history. I have a PhD from Dartmouth College in liberal arts history and Gen. Lee along with Gen Hancock were totally contrasting from historical data. Lee never stated that this was the last cause for the Confederacy. Lee actually states in his journal that there would have been union reinforcements from the Dover area. I am from outside of Providence and i am a dear Yankee but believe that history has tarnished the south. What i believe, along what many other peers agree on is that history has been scripted in favor of the north... but as they always say, to the victor goes the spoils. If you enjoyed this, you must watch Gods and Generals
