Description

Academy Award winner James Cagney delivers a tour-de-force performance as a murderously psychotic criminal mastermind with an overpowering mother complex in the crime thriller White Heat. While in prison, Cody Jarrett (Cagney) befriends an undercover cop (Edmund O'Brien) posing as a young thug--appearing to idolize the hard-bitten gangster who suffers from semi-epileptic seizures, outbursts of frightening violence and an almost incestuous attachment to his mother. Released from prison, Jarrett plots a seemingly perfect heist, unaware that his partners plan to kill him and his right-hand man is working for the police. Cornered, Jarrett chooses to go out in an explosive act of self-immolation rather than surrender in this classic of the gangster genre.

James Cagney's portrayal of Cody Jarrett is probably his best performance in any of the genres he performed in. I have seen this film numerous times and enjoy it more each time that I do. An excellent film with a great supporting cast, too.

One of the best gangster movies of any era- and i've seen quite a few. This one grabs you by the proverbial balls in the opening scenes and doesn't let go. Superb cast, acting, plot, cinematography and clearly an influence on modern directors like Tarantino- in particular Reservior Dogs. I also noticed similarites between this and the real life Great Train Robbery of 1963...makes me wonder. Absolutely essential viewing for any fan of the genre.

James Cagney was such a versatile entertainer. From song and dance man to bloodthirsty thug. He could play them all. White Heat is my favorite Cagney gangster film. I have seen it more times than I can remember.
