Captain Horatio Hornblower

I didn’t think I’d find a fun swashbuckler to top The Black Swan, but this did exactly that. After finally viewing this gem, I now know why it’s Gregory Peck’s fave. A huge Peck fan, I took a chance and so glad I did. As soon as it was over, I was ready to watch it all over again. This film is packed with clever scripting, colorful dialog, tender touching human moments. action galore with perfect pacing. You’d never know it from the first 10-15 minutes, but what you do get is the character Peck lays the solid foundation for latter storytelling. Virginia Mayo’s character has so much depth. She and Peck have restrained chemistry that sizzle. The battle scenes are grand. Why needs CGI? Fantastic supporting cast. So much fun. Rivals the staple Captain Blood, but in this reviewer’s opinion, outwits it and Peck is a more convincing lead than Flynn. This film is so re-watchable. You won’t regret the purchase. I certainly don’t. ✅
