  • Great "who-done-it"

Could it have been better? Maybe, but this film is great as it. One of the few films that really threw me and I didn't see the ending coming. The acting by Hackman and Freeman is truly great. It's like watching a play. If you are bored by long scenes of dialog that actually means something, a murder mystery without seeing the murder in gory detail, or having 90% of a film take place in a single room, then move on. If you want so see some great acting, interesting and novel "flashback" sequences and be truly stumped by the outcome then watch this film.

This is not a movie for kids who play a lot of video games. It's not an over the top action film. It doesn't offer easy answers or truths. It is a simple, well told story with solid performances, and some interesting story telling techniques. It has a noir quality to it in some sequences. It's not unlike a good stage production. This is a good solid film for mature adults who don't mind being challenged by a movie.

This is one of those rare movies I stumble upon where I wonder how come I had not heard about that before. The acting is out of this world, in particular by Gene Hackmann who just outdid himself. The script is brilliant, how it switches scenes mid-sentence and just goes back and forth. It has you guessing one way, then the other and in the end whether you were right or not, you are hit by an emotional ending that gets you.

This movie has such an amazing buildup to a heartbreaking ending. The acting is really what makes the film.
