She is a really great actress, but the movie was, well.... strange. The scene for everybody’s toast went on forever as well as the dishwasher scene. The guy cast as the father was overly awkward in his acting. Wouldn’t recommend buying it.

It's always interesting to see when a usual Hollywood Good Girl takes such a rugged and vulnerable role. Rachel Getting Married is such an incredible film because it takes a normal everyday situation and adds this beautifully eccentric character. Kym (Anne Hathaway) is temporarily released from rehab after a stint with hardcore drugs and alcohol that led to the accidental death of her family's youngest boy. She is allowed to go to her sister's (Rosemarie Dewitt as Rachel in a beautifully under-appreciated performance) wedding. Upon arrival she is constantly badgered by worried and nervous family members. In one of my favorite scenes, at the rehearsal dinner, Kym stands up to give her toast. You can tell by the way she talks and is always talking about doing drugs and being a junkie in a joking matter that she herself is still having a hard time getting over it. The family listens politely as she rambles on about her crazy past, she makes fun because she wants to feel comfortable. Instead she unintentionally draws attention away from Rachel on her most special day. This causes the whole family dynamic to unravel throughout the movie and play out in totally realistic yet dramatically irresistible performances. I highly recommend this movie for those who enjoy to be surprised and/or blown away.

Who are these people? Are we supposed to be impressed with their "musical" lifestyle? With their Buddist wedding and sarong wedding dresses? I certainly was not impressed with the intermineable toasts at the rehearsal dinner, the competitive packing of the dishwasher or the cliche shaky camera work. The movie summary says that Anne Hathaway is an ex-model who has been in and out of rehab for ten years. This is a backstory not evident in the movie. At the end of the movie, she returns to rehab. You don't know if she had had just a weekend pass or voluntarily returned after her actions before the wedding. Amateurishly scripted, poorly directed, and no character growth. Debra Winger is wasted. Don't rent it. Don't buy it.
