Description

Afghanistan, 1981, and the Soviet Union is locked in a futile and bloody battle with the Mujahedeen guerrillas. Separated from their patrol, the crew of a Russian T-62 tank engages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the local insurgents led by Taj (Steven Bauer). The tyrannical tank commander Daskal (George Dzundza) wreaks havoc on a peaceful Afghani village, pushing the moral boundaries of the tank driver, Koverchenko, (Jason Patric) to the limits. Sensing mutiny, the psychotic Daskal abandons the disenchanted tanker to die in the desert at the hand of rebels, only to find he's sealed his own fate.

Second watch since I was a kid. First one was with my father way back in the day. Definitely a classic that is overlooked in its genre

Never get involved in a land war in Asia. For sure. Best war movie about Afghanistan ever made. And maybe the best armor movie. Capt. Dale Dye bought real captured Egyptian Soviet made tanks from Israel and developed groundbreaking techniques to simulate the T-55 guns firing and the resulting recoil. A first for a Hollywood movie featuring tanks. Also unlike other movies featuring Soviet military characters -Hunt For Red October, K-19 etc.- no cheesy, fake Russian accents. It's a small touch but effective because by simply letting the actors speak in their normal accents, it gives them the ability to immerse themselves in the role.

This is an interesting movie that gives underdog's POV (here, the Afghani's) when faced with a better armed, hi tech enemy. Hmmm .. sounds like current events? I think it helps convey just how hard the Afghani's are to win over (Alexander, Genghis Khan and British couldn't). The Ruyard Kipling quotes add a nice touch. Favorite line : "You can't be a good soldier in a bad war!" Koverchenko to Daskal

This is an awesome movie about the survival of a Russian tank crew inside Afghanistan. The inside of the tank scenes are pretty unrealistic but the movie overall is great. If you love movies about tanks, you'll definately love this film.
