Had heard terrible things but it is actually a beautiful film, extremely subtly but well directed...many of the same themes as in The Piano but submerged within the thriller genre and shifted to contemporary NY...quite empowering characters, honest and anti-romance, so really true...I cannot think why Ryan was slagged so much when it came out, she is true to her hurt character but still strong and Ruffalo is brilliant...I had to turn around and watch it straight away again to grasp all the subtle ways the film builds a realistic tension to a gripping climax...quite an intelligent film and a real cut above the average...

  • "In The Cut" Showcases an Oscar-worthy Meg Ryan and a Raunchy Mark Ruffalo.

As far as movies go, not many are quite as mysterious nor are they as intriguing as Jane Campion's "In The Cut." The mind becomes boggled and shaken, and the suspense and thrills are genuine. They are not shock-horror tricks as seen in most horror movies, but rather, they slowly build up as the protagonist (portrayed by Meg Ryan) gains knowledge of the situation. This movie is phenomenal and yet is very hard to review because it moves by as if a dream. The plot is so intricate that it is extremely hard to describe; I would advise one to watch the trailer for the best synopsis. The actors all capture their roles effectively, especially Mark Ruffalo and Meg Ryan. Meg Ryan truly shines in this role, throwing away her "America's Sweet Heart" image and dawning as a sophisticated actress. As said in the title, I believe that this performance of hers was Oscar-worthy. For all of the Meg Ryan nay-sayers, watch this film and you surely will be blown away by one of the finest performances of all time. The only reason this movie did not receive the recognition it deserved was because it was genuinely different—in a good way. If a person wants to see a movie that is a mindless thriller, this is not for him or her. This movie captures the soul and essence of the characters and holds the audience all the way through. It requires all of the attention of the audience because it has an ethereal feel to it all. I have not read the book as of yet, although I do intend to do so because the movie was in fact breath-taking, and I want to see the author’s original portrayal. I can only imagine how much I am going to enjoy the book after having seen this movie. I reiterate: this movie is not for everyone. Those who do not want to sit down and take the time to watch a masterpiece in action should move along. Only those who want to take in a stunning work of art should see this film. It is a thriller, but an atypical one at that. This is a thriller that takes the time to build its characters so well that by the end of the movie a person can only relate to what Meg Ryan’s character goes through.
