This film is a must have for any fan of cyberpunk. This is Keanu Reeves' prelude to The Matrix trilogy. Brilliantly written and cast!

If you ever wondered why the ideas of the brilliant writer William Gibson had to come to us by way of other storytellers, this movie is a lot of the reason why. Stiff and stilted performances, inappropriate casting decisions and a screenplay that seems to emphasize attitude over coherence... The man writes such great books. His movie, though, was simply not so great.

Good premise——horrible execution in every possible way.

Don't let the negative reviews fool you, this is a great flick, especially if you are into the sci-fi dystopian future genre. In fact, the Matrix (1999) simply could not have been produced without the existence of Johnny Mnemonic (1995) (or the iphone). There are definitely influences from earlier sci-fi films, most noteably the city-scape of Blade Runner (1982) and the influence of virtual reality in Lawnmower Man (1992). This movie is absolutely worth watching!
  • Go read the story...

How bad is this movie? So bad that you will get a better bang for your buck if you buy the book of short stories (Burning Chrome) and read the story and make your own movie in your head. If I could give it less then 0 I would. Really, Gibson's story did not make the leap to the big screen and as some one else has pointed out, it is dated in many ways (although reading the story is less so). Once you have read Johnny Mnemonic, read Burning Chrome. If after that you have not started digging around for Neuromancer, well, watching the movie won't help, but it sure will hurt.
  • Classic Sci-Fi; excellent in its time, didn't age well.

Like lots of early-to-mid '90s Sci-Fi, this didn't age well. (80 GB? That's it? For a movie that takes place 12 years from now?) But the premise is thought-provoking, and the acting quite good. (One of Keanu's most expressive roles! Of course, that isn't saying much.) This is a classic of '90s Sci-Fi; a must-watch for Sci-Fi lovers. It's definitely worth the rental. If you're *NOT* a Sci-Fi lover, though, it's probably best to avoid it. My star rating is targeted toward Sci-Fi fans. If you're not, make it one star. *MAYBE* worth this week's special 99¢ rental, if you mildly like Sci-Fi; maybe not. Once the price goes back up, though; if you're not a big Sci-Fi nut, don't bother with it for more than $1.00.
