Description

They came to bring God, but instead brought disease and destruction. The Rev. Abner Hale (Von Sydow) and his gentle wife Jerusha (Andrews) attempt to convert early 19th-century Hawaiian natives to Christianity but find themselves ill-equipped to endure the unexpected tribulations of paradise. Surging with the excitement of windstorms, firestorms, shark attacks and magnificent island scenery, Hawaii shines as passionately as the island paradise itself.

We the native people of Hawaii are not heathens, the missionaries came and said that our way of life was bad and said that we cannot speak, dance, and live as Hawaiians. They also came and took our land away.

Loved the movie (always hoped for a sequel), but the video transfer is of poor quality.

This movie is a great example the of early 1900's missionary style. Abner and his wife (played by Julie Andrews) go to Hawaii to reach the people who were considered heathens. This is Julie Andrews before her glory days of Mary Poppins and Sound of Music. If you like Hawaiian history and missionary history this movie is for you. Sometimes you want to shake Abner for how he’s doing his work, but his wife does that in a gentle way over time that effectively influences a culture to change the hearts and traditions to get them closer to God.

They used to show this one on the movie matinee along with the movie the Hawaiians on Sunday about once a year when I was growing up. Loved it. Took me away from the Texas farm to Hawaii. Still love it just wish iTunes had the Hawaiians also!

This is a good movie, but should probably be rented first because you never know if it's your style of movie or not. Yes, please be aware that it is set in EARLY Hawaii with only natives living there. It is a sweet story and the ending shocked me, but I won't say any more. :-)
  • Great movie!

It does a really great job of telling the story of missionaries in the early 19th century. It has action, romance, and some humor. It is long, but a really good movie!!

And I found it. I've seen this movie on TCM and I thought it amazing! Very good story line with lots of enjoyment, just be aware that it is very much set in it's time frame when hawaii had not yet been civilized by americans, when the misionaries get to the island most of the women aren't wearing tops.... so please make sure to gaurd youself. Besides that, this movie is wonderful and great performances from all the cast.
