Description

From Blumhouse (Insidious and The Purge franchises, Get Out) comes a chilling tale of childhood and repressed memories of the past. After Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back in to her childhood home in Louisiana with her family, the reappearance of an imaginary friend from her youth sets in motion a threatening scavenger hunt with Jessica’s stepdaughter, Alice (Pyper Braun). As Jessica’s memories begin to surface — aided by cryptic stories from an elderly neighbor (Betty Buckley) about a portal to the spirit world — she realizes the imaginary friend she left behind is very real… and very unhappy she left.

  • Dull until a fun third act

Very throwaway horror film. The third act is wild and fun. It is dreadfully boring getting there. The characters are mostly unlikeable though the acting is acceptable.

This movie was a good time. I’m a huge Blumhouse fan, and I’ve enjoyed writer/director Jeff Wadlow’s horror work (Cry/Wolf, Truth or Dare, Fantasy Island) and I wasn’t disappointed. Is it the greatest horror movie ever, no. Is it the most original horror movie ever, also no. But, it has a unique idea that has a very solid execution with a good story, some really good scares and a couple of excellent performances. The best way I can describe it is that it feels like you’re going through a haunted house. For the most part you’ve seen it all before, but it has a unique concept and some great visuals that make it feel different enough to keep you interested. Overall, 3.5/5. Would recommend for sure.
