Description

Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.

It’s just a middle of the road movie about a person finding himself with an art portrait with really solid all round performances.

  • Better than critics say

The book was so good that even a distracted and reduced version of the story is better than most films out there. The characters in the book were realized well on the screen and the cinematography just captures the contrast between Nevada and NYC so beautifully without the usual cliché. Yes there are weaknesses, as in so many films, but its hard to see them as dramatically as the critics do.

Seriously amazing movie. It is one of my favorite books so I was not expecting much. It wow, the feel of the book and what I had in my head popped right into the screen. I am blown away. Sure it could have been 30 hours long and gone over every detail. But the essence is there. Well done.

I am surprised by all the low ratings and reviews. I think people who wrote them suffer from very short attention span. I red the book and I think that the movie holds it's own power. It is a meditation on loss, destiny and human condition. It requiers patience and sensitivity and it is emotionally very rewarding. The role of chance and destiny, karma if you like. If these are not interesting subjects then the world we are living in became a copy of itself, a copy stripped of what is worth living.
  • Far from Gold!

You want to believe in a Pulitzer Prize winning motif! But this take on the Goldfinch was way too stuffy and Scatterbrained! And it felt like a huge swell of Ennui washed over the cast! Let this one go!
  • A great adaptation

I read and loved the book and worried when critics were rating the film poorly but I’ve seen it three times now and I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does a great job of capturing certain themes from the book in the time provided, it’s shot beautifully, and the characters really come to life on screen. Some scenes even hit harder than when I read them which was a nice surprise.

Always difficult to adapt a long wonderful novel into film. A great job was done. Amazing cast and superbly acted, especially by Jeffrey Wright who once again proves he is one of his generation’s greatest talent.
