Description

She will forever be remembered as the writer who gave the world Frankenstein. But the real life story of Mary Shelley—and the creation of her immortal monster—is nearly as fantastical as her fiction. Raised by a renowned philosopher father (Stephen Dillane) in 18th-century London, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Elle Fanning) is a teenage dreamer determined to make her mark on the world when she meets the dashing and brilliant poet Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth). So begins a torrid, bohemian love affair marked by both passion and personal tragedy that will transform Mary and fuel the writing of her Gothic masterwork. Imbued with the imaginative spirit of its heroine, Mary Shelley brings to life the world of a trailblazing woman who defied convention and channeled her innermost demons into a legend for the ages.

  • Great film

I gave the film 5 stars due to Elle Fanning's performance and the other fine performances. I had just read a good annotated edition of Frankenstein based on the original 1818 publication which gave the background information on Mary Shelly and the people in her life, as well as the places she lived. Reading that book enriched my viewer experience, because the movie could not cover all the interesting details in her life nor cover the details of her original story not seen in Frankenstein movies. The movie was beautifully filmed and very touching.

I can’t imagine or explain why this movie has such a low review on Rotten Tomatoes when it is by far one of the best historical dramas I have ever seen! I remember reading Mary Shelley’s book in high school, but had the same broad stroke over Mary’s life and what led up to the inspiration of her classic work as other reviewers have mentioned here. I am so glad I took a chance tonight and purchased this film! Having watched it, I now want to go back and read Frankenstein again b/c it will mean SO MUCH MORE to me now! Absolutely loved it!

  • Another Brilliant Unhappy Woman

This movie is another theatrical example of a young woman oppressed by her circumstances, whose talent is initially exploited, but is finally recognized by her estranged father and narcissistic love interest. Talented acting chops made this movie watchable, but I should have rented it as I will not be watching it again.
  • Excellent Tribute to Mary

I really apreciated this film. Though I read Frankenstein in high school and in college, it didn't quite hit me how young Shelley was when these events transpired until I saw this. No one can really say how much this adaption matches up to the true story of Mary Shelley's life, but I think it is definately a beautiful tribute to her life and the work she gave us.

We enjoy period pieces so this was good for us. More interesting than the majority of Frankenstein movies out there really. At least I was interested in the characters and we could get lost in it for a while.
  • Back when women had bigger balls than most men today

The worlds women walked in past generations are to be envied for their push to rise up and fight for the right to pursue dreams. Today most women settle for some pathetic liberal arts degree and call it a life fulfilled as they live out a predicted stereotype.

I don’t know why the critics had to say negative things about this movie. I thought it had feeling. I thought Elle Fanning did wonderful. Scenery was beautiful as well.
