Description

Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence. From writer-director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver; American Gigolo; Affliction) comes a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary.

This movie is a remake of an Ingmar Bergman film called “Winter Light”. After reading the reviews, it’s clear many of have virtually no understanding of cinematic history. If you don’t know who Bergman was, please stay out of the comment section; you’re stupidity is tainting the user reviews.

Straightforward script and well acted. It’s dark but resonates true. We are living in a time where courtesy, spirituality, and ethics take a back seat to ME/EGO.

The performance of Ethan Hawk was perfect! The script was immaculate and the themes that are touched upon are far to real. It’s one of those movies that people are afraid of BECAUSE of the reality of it. It hits you HARD!!

This was horrible, mad I wasted the 99 cents to rent it. Definitely NOT a thriller, plain boring. The ending I questioned if it was real or a figment of his imagination.

At first I was skeptical about renting to watch this movie, due to an increasing bad reviews posted here - I knew beforehand it wasn't a thriller, or anything like this, due to an excellent review I read, praising the movie. So I went on and rented. It's a hybrid of Taxi Driver with that great Polish movie, Ida. For those who haven't watched yet this one, my advice: ignore the negative reviews posted here, and rent it. You won't regret the experience. And it's not a "liberal movie", or whatever that means.

Another propaganda based movie. A faux religious movie disguised as a thriller. Nothing more than a global warming documentary.

Movies tries to make out the Reformed minister to like a liberal Catholic priest to convice sheepish Evangleicals into beleiveing that global warming and climate change are caused by everyday humans. Never mentions that climate change is a vatican contrived scam using high alttitude aresol injection to modify weather. All leading to giving glory to the antichrist who will save the world from the eventualy fallout of nano metal particles.
  • VAPID. Ignore Rotten Tomatoes rating.

While the film pretends to be emotionally deep, it is entirely highjacked by extremism charading as deep conviction and conversion. Films that feature religion are seldom made by individuals who understand faith at all, and it shows. This film was pure bait and switch.
