Description

In a small town south of San Francisco, Sheriff Paul Del Moral (Pepe Serna) is driving home through the fog when he accidentally strikes a pedestrian, a lone Japanese man. However, before an investigation can take place the man disappears from the hospital without a trace. At the same time, Japanese mystery author Aki Akahori (Ayako Fujitani) takes a trip to San Francisco in order to escape the press tour for her latest book-a potboiler in her world famous "Inspector Takabe" series. Feeling lonely and vulnerable, she begins a romantic affair with a mysterious Japanese traveler from Reno (Kazuki Kitamura). Her new lover is charismatic and charming but abruptly disappears from the hotel, leaving behind his suitcase and a trail of questions.

  • An OK Flick

The movie does has some tension in it but the ending leaves you disappointed - the air is already out of the balloon by the time they get to the truth. 3 start for me; not worth of the 94% on the rotten tomatoes
  • Really? a let down

Actually it was a very good, well produced mystery, with just enough pacing to keep things moving, lots of twists... all good. The ending was a HUGE LET DOWN, after investing all that time and focus on the story, and some very agreeable character development, heavy identification with the main characters; call me old fashioned, why bother not completing the story? It's like you get led along on with a good meal, and the last course is omitted and thats supposed to be camp? bogus.

so boring. I turned it off after watching half of it, which is something I almost never do - even with other movies I dislike. But this movie failed so miserably in catching even the tiniest bit of my interest that I had to turn it off. The characters are one-dimensional and the movie gives you absolutely no reason whatsoever to even care about what happens to them.
  • Hitchcockian?

The hype about this film is way over the top. Hitchcock would probably turn it off after a few minutes. Really not well acted, filmed or edited.

While this may not be a typical movie, that does not make it a superb movie. I love that it takes you down some different paths and even leaves certain questions unanswered. It revealed a very different ending than I expected, which was great. However, it does meander a bit too long in directions that may not need to be traveled. The acting is good, but everyone acts the same the movie. No one person delivers lines or carries themselves differently than the rest of the cast. Because of this there does not appear to be an arch to any of the characters. The lead actress mumbles through out the entire movie barely opening or moving her mouth to deliver lines. The cinematography is bland at best. There is no shape or form to the shots. There are no lines that lead your eye around the frame; there is not chiaroscuro. Just because the camera is locked down and you watch a character move from point A to point B doesn’t make it brilliant camera work. The movie is worth watching, but it is certainly not worth the hype.

Riveting story shot in a refreshingly un-Hollywood way. The story, the acting, the lighting, the cinematography: all outstanding. Highly recommended.

Reasons to watch this film: -You want brain candy but don’t like documentaries -You like visually beautiful films -You like a good mystery -You like a good story -You think most mysteries are obvious and a waste of time, but haven’t written off the genre yet -You’re interested in seeing SF landscapes more than Reno I went to see this film when it was in the theaters in SF and wow. It’s smart, well written, interesting, suspenseful, compelling and many more positive adjectives. I had no idea what to expect and even if I did I probably wouldn’t expect it.

I never write reviews. Like never! But this movie is that movie you wanna see. It's relatable. No booms and bangs but I promise you it's worth it. It has all the twists and suspense in one.

I often lose faith in movie-making, until I see a movie like this. Great story that keeps you guessing the entire time. The acting was extremely good. I highly recommend Man from Reno.

I've never been one for 'foreign films' (I hate reading subs titles). However the film title caught my attention. The storytelling in this film is fantastic. The plot is solid and the character develop is exceptional. I noticed the Director has done a few other films in a similar genre. Boyle has an interesting story with a different approach to filmmaking. He's definitely caught my attention. Can't wait to see what he does next.
