Description

With exclusive access to the eight to nine year-old Rookies division in the San Antonio region of the Texas Youth Football Association, the first season of Friday Night Tykes follows five teams on and off the field throughout the 2013 season, from pre-season training through the state championships. Along the way, cheerleaders cheer, tailgaters barbecue and the crowd goes wild, but intense rivalries flare, parents and coaches clash and the young players face some very adult pressures and concerns, from extreme training drills, heckling from rabid fans and balancing on-the-field expectations against a typical off-the-field childhood.

Let down by censorship...

Sorry to say, I absolutely love the content, just not iTunes delivery method. As a coach myself, I have to admit that I respect the juxtaposition of "grown up" tykes and the coaches' controversial methods of treating "kids" like adults... albeit the smash-mouth, swearing, intensity and adult-related shaping of young football players VS. the reality that these "tykes" truly are "kids", and may be forced to unconventional training methods that involve grown-up themes, such as bickering betwixt coaches, parents, referees... and even the public. Having seen this program on Netflix, I was able to respect the uncensored, full-content delivery of being in the moment, feeling the "true intensity" as it unfolded. I wanted to purchase it immediately. However, after seeing that iTunes has kept the censored, "ok-for-TV" version of the source material, it immediately left me felt let down. Without the first portion of the contrast (i.e. the real-life swearing, intensity, etc.) being shown without restraint, the iTunes version just seems "too tame" and afraid to show the actual reality of uncensored training of the "tykes". Without that part of the juxtaposition, the contrast feels much less "real". Unfortunately, until iTunes decides to release the series, uncensored, as Netflix has, I will remain "let down". My suggestion, honestly (and I purchase ALL of my content from iTunes), is to watch the series on Netflix (if you have access to it). Then, and only then, will you see the actual reality of what these "tykes" are subject to. Just my humble opinion. Content: 5 Stars; iTunes delivery of content: 2 Stars. My rating: 3 Stars.
good show but kind of disturbing

its cool and really captures the best of youth football but the coaches cross the line by teaching 8 and 9 year olds swears and how to hurt the other team's best players
Nothing like Texas football

Watching this show makes me proud to say I'm from Texas. Someone should remind these coaches ,those are young kids not high schoolers.

I started watching this with my 10 year old and we enjoyed the first episode. Now he would like to see more. Given that football season is winding down, this may fill that void.
