Yes, it has diversity and adversity that doesn’t feel totally fake. I can really see why this series gets great reviews especially from the younger crowd. The main issue I have with this series is the issue I have with the old ABC Family and the newer FREEFORM channel. The channel pushes a very liberal agenda and also has a significant portion of their series portray young people as hypersexualized which is not only unrealistic, but somewhat creepy and harmful to the audience it attracts. They also throw in unrealistic views and negative views of religion. So far, The Fosters, in season 1, portrays these issues but doesn’t cross the line like some of the other series on this channel. I’m just now getting into this series so I will see if this dynamic changes. So far I have not seen one of their staple characters: the slut with a heart of gold. However, I have noticed that this series tries to have a social warrior component. In the first season they tackle illegal immigration, gay characters, teen sex, possible trans characters, alcoholism, morning after pill, rape, etc. It would be nice to have a more rounded portrayal of these issues instead of just presenting what they think is right. These issues are real but they are way more complex than this series makes them out to be. Young people need to be exposed to differing viewpoints in order to develop critical thinking skills. Additionally, I don’t like the constant dishonesty of the characters. This family really loves each other and they display this quality on screen. The cast definitely has charisma. But, in most of this seasons episodes, the characters lie (major lies)to each other and most of the time they don’t need to. They could have resolved issues in other more positive and morally sound ways. Again, so far the main issue I really object to is the hyper sexuality, homo erotic depictions, especially of very young characters. I hope they continue to work to balance these issues on screen. That would create a stronger and healthier show.
