Description

In the projects. On the docks. In City Hall. In the schools. And now, in the media. The places and faces change, but the game remains the same. HBO presents the fifth — and final — season of this acclaimed drama series that focuses on the vagaries of crime, law enforcement, politics, and the media in Baltimore, MD. In the final season, the series expands its focus into the media — specifically the role of newspapers in big-city bureaucracy — as it follows a newspaper staff as they struggle to maintain integrity and meet deadlines in the face of budget cuts and staff reductions. The ensemble cast includes Dominic West, Lance Reddick, Sonja Sohn, Wendell Pierce, Clarke Peters, and Seth Gilliam.

  • I only wish

I only wish they would make more series of this caliber. The commitment to a great story, and the cajones to invest in the full story with all the arcs played out fully. Next to Deadwood, the Wire stands tall and what are the ingredients that make shows like this so well received ? Reality. Historical truth is always so much more compelling when you watch with awe and know these things really could have and did play out as portrayed. Put it out there, and make us feel, and believe in a living breathing reality. When you think of all the great movies like The Godfather series, Saving Private Ryan, and a TV series, the Wire and Deadwood; these things really happened and great producers bring it to life for us to experience.

… This is good show, but it is not without its problems. The writing was good and stylistically, well done. The grit was there, the reality is felt. But, unfortunately, I can see why the show never really got all the accolades that people thought it deserved. For one, the acting is horrible. There a few actors who are good, but not enough to carry the show. Then, add to the fact that you feel nothing for most of the characters. Throughout the entire series, I was rarely moved on an emotive level with most of the cast. Which then reflects badly on the Direction, obviously. It was if they were asleep at the wheel. In series like this, they needed drive emotional and visceral affect up and instead there is disconnect with the characters. So, in that respect, it comes across as very hackneyed.

Although Season 4 was my favorite (those kids just killed me), The Wire was a great show. Why this show wasn't loaded down with Emmys is beyond me. Goes to show what those awards really mean- nothing. Everyone involved should be proud of the work they did. I also want to add that I will never forgive the writers for what happened to Randy and Dukie, but thank God Bugs had a pretty good ending.

One of the three best cop shows ever produced. Sad to see it end after only five years. The last episode brings so many things to a ending that can be a new start for the ones left.
