Description

In the middle of the ocean, a thousand miles from nowhere, a floating city rises above the sea. Twenty-four stories high, three football fields long, carrying 5,000 sailors and marines and 85 military aircraft — this is the USS Nimitz. From May to November 2005, a team of documentary filmmakers embedded aboard the USS Nimitz as it deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The result is a raw and honest look at the United States Navy and its role at a critical turning point in this controversial war. With startling intimacy, Carrier follows a core group of subjects as they navigate personal conflicts around their jobs, family, faith, patriotism, and the rites of passage — all against the extraordinary backdrop of the war in Iraq.

This television series can only be described as outstanding. If i could give more than 5 stars, believe me, i would. This series puts the audience in the lives of US sailors and Marines who volunteer to put themselves through these tough deployments. The people in the series let us into their lives and share their thoughts about the war, deployment, and some of their own personal lives. We get to see what it takes to operate a Nimitz super carrier and the sacrifice given by the crew to make it happen. This series defeats the stereotype that naval enlistees and officers have an easy job. If this series doesnt give you a whole new respect for the men and women deployed at sea, i dont know what will. From something as simple to scrubbing floors to things as difficult as landing a FA-18 super hornet on top of a moving, swaying aircraft carrier, you'll definitely feel interested and involved with the individuals aboard the USS Nimitz. An EXCELLENT series that kept me ready for more. Especially for those who are interested in the military, you'll love this show! No matter your preferred branch (I happen to be going hooah) youll hold a deep sense of interest. Take a look at the previews and see for yourselves!

I personally was touched and moved by the personal sacrafices of each of these young men and woman. Surprisingly I never new the high demands and gigantic responsibity would make them feel as though they regretted there service at times. But Im sure when it is all said and done and there time is up serving there country they like no other will appreciate there freedom like no other. And when they hear on the news headlines of some navy ship needed some were in the world needed to keep the peace or provide humanatarian effort, they will bow there head in a little prayer for that person that was just like them, that he or she will make it back home safe and sound and if possible in one peace.

I've seen this series several times already, and I never get tired of it. I'm getting ready to join the US Navy, and seeing this really gets me excited, and nervous at the same time. This series alone has opened my eyes up a bit more on the U.S. Navy, and has not derailed my decision whatsoever. Fair Winds and Following Seas!

Every documentry on aircraft carriers focuses on the pilots, planes, and ship. When this film crew documented the crew and what it's like to live and work on an aircraft carrier, the Navy had to have wanted to destroy all the footage. This is an excellent series to watch if your considering a career in the military because it's a real look into the military.

All I can say is. Thank God I was on a submarine. These guys and girls wine so much. We were full of men who were dedicated and professional. Surface Navy is full of babies. It is amazing the thing even floats with shipmates like that on board. Anytime we had a sailor not pulling their weight - they were drummed out. You know what I am saying is true. Because, ask any sub sailor. Anytime you were threaten with a major punishment it was always the same - "we will send you to the surface fleet." It has to be bad if our punishment is to be with them. One example; Chiefs eat with E6 and below. Field day is everyone. There are very few E-3 and below on board. I was E-4 before I saw a sub. This was a great show to watch. And to use to warn anyone - if you join the Fleet - go subs.
