I am trained through my own personal life experiences to look for flaws, only see the negative, not to expect much good. And yet, I am stunned by how hard it is to find any of those automatic fallback qualities in this series. This is the single best television show I have ever watched. Sam Esmail is a sheer genius as director AND writer, Rami Malek is perfection, Christian Slater has never done better work, the music is stunning, the set design, costuming, even minor characters and extras are all spot on. I suppose my one, oh so minor issue is that I find Portia Doubleday to be a weak actor for this role. I had to find something. The intersection between today's societal ills and this "fictional" storyline's ills are seamless and terrorizing. A true work of genius that pulls open just a crack the mysterious door we cannot open ourselves to show us a glimpse of the dark underbelly that effortlessly manipulates us. The door that keeps us frightened and immobile every minute of every day. To not question the system, nor take on the truly powerful. Because in truth, we really have no idea who it is behind that door. We are programmed to accept the illusion of personal control. We don't know or have ever seen our true puppet master(s). The refreshingly dark and imaginative writing takes the fears that drive us daily and forces us to look them dead in the eyes. Does that make me personally less scared? Does it make me sleep better at night? Quite the opposite. But, that could be the key to the show's capacity to scare one senseless. The underlying but well disguised sense of hope it offers. Hope, the most untrusted and uncomfortable feeling of all. Hope is what we are all expected to cling to. No matter what we are given in life. Just hope, keep hoping, all will be well. But it is an unfamiliar, almost nauseating sensation that we are systematically robbed of every single minute of every single day with utter unconsciousness as to why it makes us so uncomfortable. Because the cure for that discomfort is more hope. You could look at this review as melodramatically pessimistic; it it is just the opposite, painfully hopeful. What beautiful irony.

This is one of those shows that's definitely best to enjoy it all at once. If you have the self-restraint, wait until the end and binge watch episode behind episode for max enjoyment and most importantly comprehension
