The Gunman

To be an action and adventure movie, you need action and you need adventure. "Talking" and "angst" don't count - they are BORING. The fights in the film are cool - hence the three stars. But there are no stars for trying to build a romance by leaving the babe among hostiles for eight years without dying or losing a limb or something beyond a mumbled excuse. And trying to make a Sean Penn into a good guy feels more like a reference to him doing a stint in Haiti. It actually stops the action and feels like a PR move.

With weak characters, a muddled plot, and a sluggish pace, there isn’t much to say about this movie. Everything they show tries to convey social commentary on blood minerals, but isn’t reinforced strongly enough in my opinion. Pierre Morel simply doesn’t give it the same flair he gave Taken. With a soundtrack by Marco Beltrami that does its job, an appropriate tone, and reasonably salty language, The Gunman may be better left forgotten. That’s really all I gotta say, except that it’s best for background noise.

Like all the great actors, Penn can communicate a lot with little to no dialogue. He shows a world weary toughness mixed with shadings of sensitivity and a yearning for a peaceful life, which makes this pretty standard, but well made action flick a must. Loved Trinca's expressiveness too. Wish Elba could have had a bigger role. But I really wish iTunes would make Penn's underrated 1990 gem, STATE OF GRACE available for purchase!!!

The roles should've been reversed. Idris would've been better as the young attractive lead not Penn who looks way too old to play this role. Snooze fest.

Barely made three stars , cost three dollars That's a dollar a star . I only fast forwarded, Only about three times. Maybe I will watch it backwards next time.

So the story is pretty much the same old action hero with the good guy being one of the bad guys in the beginning - bad guy turns good guy I guess. The idea is probably believable, but the movie seems a little disconnected and unbelievable in some parts. Like the idea that he had to fly the coop after anonymously killing the a guy, but then goes off to do good by helping drilling wells in the same area. Girl love boy, boy never forgets girl, so called friend takes girl, but girl goes immediately back to boy, but then best friend dies and makes it all good. I had fun watching it, but it is not going to win originality award or best actor etc.

What a waste of time.

Amazingly bad. An agenda not presented well. Bad acting, like watching a high school play. Don’t waste your money or your time watching.

This probably looked like an epic story on paper, but in execution it fell short. It seems like an amateur made this movie who tried too hard to be something or someone they are not.
