Description

Madcap murder mystery meets razor-sharp relationship comedy in this witty twist on the detective movie—think Nancy Drew run amok in present-day Brooklyn. Husband and wife filmmaking team Sophia Takal and director Lawrence Michael Levine (Gabi on the Roof in July) star as recently engaged but perpetually bickering couple Barri and Noah. When their elderly downstairs neighbor suddenly kicks the bucket, the flighty Barri immediately suspects foul play. Cue a hilariously harebrained investigation as Barri—outfitted in a Columbo-style trench coat—enlists her secretly-in-love-with-her lesbian roommate (Arrested Development's Alia Shawkat) to help her get to the bottom of the matter. Parenthood's Jason Ritter co-stars in this screwball whodunit, which crackles with zingy one-liners, a brassy retro score, and real romantic tension.

The movie starts strong, but quickly gets confused and loses its way. Takal's role felt particularly one-note, which is a shame, considering she’s shined before in films like Green and Gabi on The Roof in July.

I agree. Boring and amateurish. aafter an hour-plus of pure filmic drivel, we had to turn it off.
  • Manhattan Murder Mystery?

Really reminds me of that. Duh. The director is at the very least a huge Woody Allen fan. “I’m not the outdoors type.”?

Worth the watch! The critics had it right on this one, it’s a funny & entertaining little film - I think the 1 star reviews below might be fake. Barri’s voice could have been a touch less whiney throughout, and I found myself semi hoping she would be shot in the end - but overall she was a super fun character and this is worth watching.

Painfully bad . Amatuerishly and incoherently written, acted and directed. Rarely have I found characters as annoying as these.

Absolutely one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The plot is all over the place, the characters are insufferable, self-absorbed idiots and all I kept hoping was that whoever killed the old woman would come back and kill all the other characters to put me out of my misery. It’s not screwball or comedy. Save your money.
