Based on the acclaimed Cormac McCarthy novel, director James Franco’s CHILD OF GOD follows Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man in 1960s Tennessee. Deprived of family and home, Ballard collapses into a life of crime and degradation.

The acting of the story is both disarming and focused. Mental illness and it’s results follow the main character throughout this filme whose instincts are his only way of participating in the reality we all share. A tragedy and a powerful filme. Franco should be commended. Haze should be awarded.
Hardly a waste of your time. Not for the timid or politically correct. It’s real life.
accurate recreation of the book

If you’re a fan of Cormac McCarthy’s book by the same name, you’ll enjoy the film. The story is dark, and as always with McCarthy, dives deep into the depths of evil in our world. I would not recommend it as a date night, or watch with the family etc. type of movie. This is a great dark film though. The lead is incredible as he takes on the role of Lester. Watched the movie with another fan of the book and we both were amazed by how right everything felt throughout the film, minus a few changes here and there (much less than most adaptations).

The movie opens with a bowel movement and Franco continues to do this on your head for the entire film. The longer you watch the worse it gets. I’ll never be able to watch Franco in any movie ever again without thinking about why he would create and release something like this to the public. Not sure what kind of following he is looking for in his films. I don’t even understand why iTunes would allow this in its library. I understand film students trying to create something that moves the soul but there is a point where it just gets disturbing and moves past a story line… and this is it.

Excellent acting, but the story and pacing are coma inducing. Weak...
A disheveled movie

This is a movie where the intention of making a great movie has been lost in the abyss of turning it into someones art project. As talented as I think Franco is, he led himself astray on this one. This book had all the makings of a great film, such as that of ‘No Country for Old Men’, but alas Franco's creative realm forced this film to pay the price of mediocrity at best, a real shame, considering the acting was superb and I am a huge fan of Cormack McCarthy. Rent or buy at your own peril.

Ouch. But gotta give James Franco due credit. Stunning attention to a strong deprived character. Gross face value; lost and crawling through caves seems a metaphor of his dark mind.
Disgusting and depraved!

Every now and then a movie comes along that is so depraved, disgusting, and without any redeeming value whatsoever that one wishes it could be unwatched. This is that film. Pure and utter filth without any sense of direction, purpose, or meaning.
Then again, if watching someone have sex with dead people, crawl in the ground for 15 minutes, drip snot from his left nostril, and chase animals in a forest is your thing, by all means see it.
Very strange

Haven't seen it but being a huge fan of Cormac McCarthy's dark and disturbing books I'm game to give a rental try. The book I'd really like to see put on film is Blood Meridian

No idea why anyone would want to watch this depravity. I admit I rented it thinking it would take a different track than it did. I also failed to read any reviews. Part way through the movie after the lead character started to play with dead bodies I stopped it and then read reviews and a synopsis. If someone can find this artful I seriously hope they don’t live in the same state as me.
