I was surprised at how entertaining this was, and at how much sentiment it evoked. The flashes between past and present told an additional story of how events in his childhood (both marked and fleeting) forged his character as an adult. It was a reminder to me of how people can be incredibly sensitive and resilient. I think Boseman did a great job. It couldn't have been easy to tackle a character as complicated and stereotyped as Brown.

This was a very good film that hit on all cylinders. The director did a very good job condensing the complex life of an enigmatic Mr. Brown into a 2+ hour story. Going with life themes vs. chronology worked, but it made the film challenging to follow. This is a risky approach for the short attention spans of most modern movie goers. Making the transitions between themes could have been tighter and better connected. One thing I would have liked to see is more of the infamous interplay between James and his band members over time and how those relationships shaped the music. Those minor flaws notwithstanding, this was one of the best movies of 2014. Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of James Brown was electric, he definitely deserved an Oscar nod.

I was really disappointed with this one. I went in thinking I'd like it and I came out not liking it. The film's slow pace is mainly what made me not like the movie. I couldn't really get into it. However I think the performance by Chadwick Boseman was Incredible. Overall, I didn't like the movie but really what holds the movie together is Chadwick Boseman's performance as James Brown. 2/5

Starts out a little confusing, not really for the simple minded. Chadwick Boseman does a great job in the film. Movie slows down later and becomes a great story and showing of James Browns life story
  • I love it
