Description

A mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects Ila, a neglected housewife, to Saajan (Irrfan Khan), a lonely man on the verge of retirement. Through a series of exchanged notes that they pass back and forth through the lunches, Saajan and Ila find comfort in their unexpected friendship. Gradually, their notes become little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. They each discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams. Still strangers physically, Ila and Saajan become lost in their virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities.

As a person of color, I am so bored of Hollywood’s stale, non-diverse, white toast rom-coms. Love to see a good story with substance AND culture.

Sweet story, terrific acting, great direction, with a realistic cultural backdrop. If your all-time favorite movie list includes Sleepless in Seattle, One Fine Day, and The Holiday, then don’t miss The Lunch Box.

Got this movie because of the reputation of the male protagonist. Even though slow-moving, it is poignant and interesting enough to keep you entertained even on treadmill or elliptical.
  • Touching Love Story

This is a very touching love story that is not swift with the romance nor does it use the cheap, worn out cliches to push the romance. Instead it slowly weaves its story through the lives of two individuals whose lives have gone down a lonely path that criss crosses by accident and suddenly, they are facing an opportunity to change their drab lives. A very enjoyable film that shows how life’s littles mistakes or accidents can lead to a great destiny if you only reach out for it.

The acting and imagery in this film were amazing. Though I was a bit disappointed with the ending initially, I think I was really sadder that it had ended at all. You really get attached to the characters in spite of any subtitles. Worth the buy!

I’m a fan of both Bollywood movies and parallel cinema. This was a subtle, sincere and beautiful movie.
