Description

Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield - on the sea - as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. "300: Rise of an Empire" pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

I won't comment on the gore level save to say ketchup prices went up nation-wide during filming. While the first 300 flic actually paid some attention to historical facts, this film dives off the deep end into fantasy, invoking evil spirits, steam punk inspired bronze armoured ships (only 2000 years early) and a numbner of purely fictional main characters (especially on the Persian side. To build sympathy the film makers tell us the Greek ships though agile, were inferior to those of their opponents. Nothing could be further from the truth - Greek ships were renowned in this era and the navies of the Greek cities considered the greatest in the known world. Their navies would allow Greek colonies and trade to be established as far west as France and Spain, throughout Italy, in Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon and across the Black, Caspian and perhaps even the Aral Sea -- in modern day Kazakstan, a distance of roughly 2000 miles by sea and rivers. The Greeks counted southern Italy and Scicly as part of Magna Graecae -Greater Greece. The film tells us the Persian fleet was commanded by Artemesia - a Greek women kept as a child prostitute and then trained as an assassin. She was in fact a daughter of Greek Nobility and titled Queen, though she owed alliegence to Xerxes. She indeed had 5 ships at the battle, but is accounted by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus as having advised Xerxes against fighting at Salamis. She did not die in the battle, but according to legend later died a suicide at home in Caria after a failed love affair. Her son succeeded her. The Battle of Salamis is one of the most famous of the era and did not involve a last minute rescue by the Spartans (they had no naval tradition and only 14 or so ships). The brilliant tactics employed are still studied today, and put superior ships, seamanship and local knowledge of winds and currents against superior numbers (fewer than 400 Greek ships against 1200 Persian vessels) for a clear Greek victory, the Persian fleet was largely destroyed, with much of Xerxes' army killed in battle or drowning. The Spartan queen did not fight in the battle. Spartan women were not allowed to train in martial arts -in Sparta a woman's principal duty was to produce sons. The Spartans were rigourists concerning law and custom - it's the reason only 300 showed to the first battle. They would not have permitted a woman to participate, let alone lead their forces.

I really did. I wanted to like it because I absolutely loved the first movie. I felt like the spirit of the story was there, but couldn't quite be captured. I also thought the acting was (at times) melodramatic, but for the most part well done. There were definitely good and not-so-stellar parts, but all in all, the bad outweighed the good.
