Description

From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so - with nothing left to lose - Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother. The impressive cast of Christian Bale and Casey Affleck are rounded out by Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe.

This is a really underrated film. The performances (Bale, Affleck, Defoe, Harrelson) were amazing. If you’re a fan of any of these actors, definitely give this film a chance.

The film has great characters, a great setup, lots of drama and action…and then fizzles somehow. The end (probably intentionally) left a ton of loose ends. As an action film, it lacks payoff. As a dramatic portrayal, it works great. It's so compelling though, that I found myself re-watching it hoping something would change, my opinion perhaps. It's a disappointing B because it had so much potential to be an A. Frustratingly, I think so much more could have been done, although I couldn't have done it as I am not a director. I would watch a sequel or backstory of the villains though.
  • Love it.

A truly stunning letdown. For more than an hour and a half, you plod through some great acting and cinematography, angst, depression, desperation and more angst, waiting... waiting... waiting... for the story to begin. Then, just when you think it's finally begun... it ends! Based on the pacing, I had begun to think I was watching a three-hour movie, right up until... whoops! the end credits start rolling. Did they run out of money before they could produce the second half of the movie? Did they blow the whole budget on setup and forget to execute? If you get stuck watching this one, start at about the halfway mark. You won't miss a thing. Better still, don't waste your time. An incredible waste of some great talent.

Rotten tomatoes is a really bad review system….This is a great movie in all aspects. Classic performance by Bale (as expected) and from Woody. It is ridiculous giving this movie 54% and giving "Enemy" freaking 89 or whatever it has…
  • If I could give it a zero, I would
