Description

Afternoon Delight follows Rachel (Kathryn Hahn - Step Brothers, We're the Millers), a quick-witted yet tightly coiled thirty-something bored with her daily routine of preschool auctions, a lackluster sex life and a career that has gone kaput. Looking to spice up her marriage, Rachel takes her husband, Jeff (Josh Radnor, How I Met Your Mother, Liberal Arts), to a strip club and meets McKenna (Juno Temple - Killer Joe, The Dark Knight Rises), a stripper she becomes obsessed with saving. Rachel adopts McKenna as her live-in nanny, wreaking havoc on her friends, family and herself.

The trailer for this movie is very light-hearted with a "women helping women" vibe. However, the movie was quite depressing and honestly, it was the most cringe-worthy thing I have seen in a while. For the love of God, don't watch it with parents or relatives or anything. I enjoyed the actors but many of the scenes were horrifically awkward and I didn't really understand Rachel's motives for anything she did. 3/10, will not watch again.

I felt the preview for this movie completely lied to me. It is not a fun movie at all. It is dark and disturbing. I wish I could un-see this movie.

Sometimes you don’t know who is writing these reviews, and it is challenging to know which to believe. I am a female, mid 40’s, intelligent movie watcher. This movie cracked me up! It was at times funny, sad, wacky, but the acting was great, and Jill Soloway is such a good writer (Six Feet Under, Transparent, etc). If you enjoy intelligent, indie films, you will love this one!
  • This is not a comedy!!!

This movie is not a comedy! It is utter and complete rubbish. There is nothing funny about some privileged hipster soccer mom ruining her life and the lives of her friends out of sheer boredom. Absolutely nothing!!!

I avoided this movie when it came out because of the way in which it was advertised / marketed. It looked like a faux-"naughty" sex comedy with a suitably lame title. Jill Soloway's film is occasionally quite funny, but never at the expense of what is a potent examination of woman desperately trying to find not only a meaningful connection to her husband, child and life -- but to gain insight into herself. Kathryn Hahn consistently delivers impressive performances in roles far beneath her skill. In this film she delivers a brave, uncomfortable and intimately realistic performance that rivals any of the actresses who have received Academy Awards in the last five years. The only one of those I can think of that might have rival this performance was Cate Blanchette's in BLUE JASMINE. In addition to Hahn's remarkable performance, Jill Soloway creates a film that is not only entertaining — it is an undeniably potent examination that goes far deeper than expected. It is refreshing to see a filmmaker who is able to use comedy to achieve so much. It is sad it has failed to connect with the audience who would value it. If you're looking for female-perspective potty humor popcorn movie with trite resolution -- you should stick to the latest Melissa McCarthy vehicle or the upcoming Amy Schumer flick. Because this film is not for you.
  • Waste of Time

Good actors in an insipid, predictable plot that generates more frustration than pleasure. There is a reason that the reviews are at opposite ends of the spectrum. I suspect that guys, of which I am one, find this plotless trip to be endlessly annoying, while many women will see it as insightful. Vive la difference!

Although this film is described as a "comedy" it is more a human interest "comedy-drama." It is funny, sensual, uncomfortable and touching. The scenes development with the director's constant acknowledgment that the length of the film is limited. The acting is done well enough that you are not reminded that it is acting. Some plot conveniences to move the story along. Nice scenes and sets. Well filmed with entirely acceptable editing. All in all a worthy effort and it is recommended.
