Description

ONLY THE YOUNG follows the story of three teenagers that live in a small desert town in Southern California – a town dominated by foreclosed homes and underpasses, unfilled swimming pools and skate parks. These kids must find things to do in a place that offers nothing – yet in the course of observing their day-to-day lives, we see them discover friendship, first love, heartbreak, and what it means to be young. Tippet and Mims’ delicate, ethereal filmmaking and ONLY THE YOUNG’s innocent yet rebellious subjects collectively embody the very essence of adolescence.

  • Interesting at face value...

The documentary is shot and edited beautifully and I love that you can clearly understand the time jumps based on the kids' hairstyles. It's important to remember that while the generalized themes of young relationships, attitudes, feelings, and dreams are obvious front-runners in this documentary, it is very focused on these individuals who are so closely tied to their religion (if not sometimes at their own peril?) and not about a general American youth. Every new situation that the kids encounter is filmed in a way that exemplifies teen urgency. At one particular moment, that event or feeling is the most important, all consuming thing and then the next moment it is easily dropped from their radar. Amongst all the teenage naivety there are little gems of instances of great maturity and understanding. Viewers may be left wanting for a bit more of a character arc, but the "story" almost ends where it began, with a few modifications and hair changes.

I quite liked this movie. Sweet and nostalgic. Teens feelings are well depicted. Love the music as well.
  • Religious film

I wish the description had noted that this is a religious film. These kids would be better off if they left their God behind and moved on with their lives. On the upside, the photography is pretty and the soundtrack is decent.

This is a really well shot and constructed documentary. The characters are engaging, the landscapes beautifully captured, and the soundtrack could be one of the best doc soundtracks ever. Great job directing/editing!

I really wanted to like this documentary but it just fell flat. Started off strong, but lost direction.

This may be the best movie ever made. I cried through most of it because my best friend will also be moving away soon so I understood it.
