Description

Academy Award® Winners Christopher Walken (Supporting Actor, "The Deer Hunter," 1978) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Actor, "Capote," 2005) strike all the right chords with Academy Award® Nominee Catherine Keener (Supporting Actress, "Capote," 2005; Supporting Actress, "Being John Malkovich," 1999) and Mark Ivanir in this powerful story that blends raw emotion with fiery passion to form an unforgettable cinematic masterpiece. After 25 years together, the members of a world-renowned string quartet learn that their beloved cellist (Walken) may soon be forced to retire. But the news stirs up equally painful challenges when competing egos, harbored resentment, and irrepressible lust threaten to derail the group as they struggle to maintain harmony in their music — and their lives.

A great film! Outstanding performances by the members of the quartet and supporting cast. A bit sad to watch Philip Seymour Hoffman, a very talented actor. Excellent soundtrack. 🎻🎶

As a musician I have to say that Christopher's stance in the beginning while he is talking to his class does not coincide with the way musicians, especially conductors or teachers, look . Their arms are never crossed, they are animated, they use there hands, their arms, to communicate at the same time as their words. It doesn't fit, at all, even given his diagnosis. Does not gel. And I haven't even seen the whole movie yet. It is almost a turn off because it looks unreal or honest. Oh well.
  • Schmaltz and baloney

Its stars and its veneer of high art pretentiousness don't hide that this is essentially a soap opera that aims for Bergman and only achieves Woody Allen at his worst. The terrible script and characters are impossible to believe in. The clunky metaphors and pseudo-poetic life lessons are unintentionally funny -- when they're not annoying. For a movie about music and Manhattan it's curiously clueless about both. EG, nobody seems to have coached these actors in how to fake playing their instruments, and their absurdly vast Manhattan apartments look like Pottery Barn showrooms and would cost these fake musicians a zillion dollars. The characters' ridiculous romance-novel relationships never ring true either. Don't know how this roped in its stars, or how it has fooled so many critics and viewers, but beneath its high gloss it's pure schmaltz and phony baloney. If that's your cup of tea, go for it.

A strong drama, that only suffers a tiny bit from a weak ending. Christopher Walken is a marvel, Hoffmann and Keener too. Fascinating look into the world of classical musicians and their interdependent lives.

This story takes you behind the scenes of a talented quarter who have played together for a quarter of a century but whose world is rocked when the quartet's cellist -- the older musician and steady man for the group - is faced with possibly needing to retire. Old hurts, jealousies and other unfinished business rise to the surface == and the movie beautifully portrays the unravelling and growth of the individual players. Walken is perfect for the role, Hoffman so charmingly real, Keener fragile yet strong, and Mark Ivanar (who for the first time reminded me of Daniel Craig) bares his soul in order to break through to the passion that is waiting inside. Really enjoyable -- so glad I gave it a chance. Walken and Hoffman should have been nominated.
  • Glad they're still making adult movies!

This movie was nicely acted by the four principles, but Christopher Walken definitely made this movie something special. The movie has a lot of interesting, thought provoking moments in it, and the Beethoven music serves perfectly at the end to bring us to an understanding of the characters and a very moving climax.
