The Bridge On the River Kwai

Having 1917, Dunkirk in recent memory, I must say I’m spoiled in what the horrors of war can look like. The bridge on the river Kwai is very cliche, including the seven always beautiful Asian women walking barefoot through the jungle carrying all the men’s uniforms, swimsuits, beach towels and shaving equipment for a commando raid. But like I said, I’m sure it was spectacular in 1957.

the 4k vers of this is only maginally - if at all- better than thanupscaled(on sony 900f) dvd release. sound quality is slightly better, not sure how they managed that, but there is some nice surround elements. i guess i cant complain to much as it was only $5, but i was expecting more from it. would love to know if anybody has seen this and the 4k hdr disc and if there was any significant benefit to the disc to be clear my lower rating is for the very grainy picture- the movie gets 5+ stars:)

General Percivel was the Commander responsible for surrendering commonwealth forces to the Japanese at the end of the Malaya Campaign. 80,000 men were sent into Japanese captivity whereas two thirds survived brutal captivity. When Percivel heard this movie was coming out in 1956 he lobbied against it. But you know what if it wasn't for this great movie I would never have known about the British surrender at Singapore.

Saw this when it was first released on the wide screen and loved it; knew it would become one of, if not the best. Holden, Guiness, Hayakawa, Hawkins; they could not have chosen a better bunch of actors for the roles they were given. Though they are all departed now, they won't remain that way forever (Acts 24:15).

An absolutely beautiful Cinamascope movie, priding itself of its rich, sweeping. panorama shots; and the best Apple could do was cut off both sides to fullscreen the movie instead of using the full widescreen majesty of the original. Fifteen dollars for a beloved movie---ruined by apple technicians and Apple Corp. wanton greedyness. I want a refund!! And so read my somewhat scathing report before I dug up the bit esoteric information about the hidden little switch in the upper right corner of the movie control screen that sets the movie to play at full-screen or widescreen at choice. Another bit of deeply hidden information from our friends at Apple.

Way, way up there on my list of the best-crafted movies ever. Every part of it is at the highest level of excellence, as close to perfection as movies ever get. Guinness is amazing and leads a great cast. For all its great size and scope it's never boring, and never loses focus on the characters. Very few directors have made epics as well as Lean -- this and Lawrence of Arabia, holy cow. I've watched them both many times.

This WWII Movie is with out a doubt a #1 Favorite of mine. This POW war movie set in the 1940's is a giant in acting and place of movie producing. 1957 movie actors where real actors, movie stars by all accounts.
