Description

From Jay and Mark Duplass, the writer/directors of the Sundance hits “The Puffy Chair,” “Cyrus,” and “Jeff Who Lives at Home” comes “The Do-Deca-Pentathalon” - the story of two grown brothers who secretly compete in a homemade Olympics during a family reunion. When their fierce and disruptive competition is uncovered, the brothers must choose between their passion for beating the hell out of each other and the greater good of the family.

Laugh out loud funny at parts. Loved the actor who plays the poker-playing brother. He makes the movie.

Slow, a sort of watching paint dry kind of slow. The film just never really seems to stimulate at any level.

This is the only Duplass film thus far that hasn't thoroughly irritated or disappointed me. The fact they're improving gradually shows they approach filmmaking honestly, and now I'm looking forward to further growth from them. (Perhaps one day they'll even grace us with real cameras and tripods.)
  • Not the best of Duplass

For me, 'Do-Deca' and 'Jeff' are definitely weaker Duplass films; not so intense, witty or simply interesting plot-wise. This classic (cliche?) brother bonding/reunion movie is most similar to 'Jeff' and 'Puffy Chair' out of all other Duplass movies. With 'Jeff' they try to be more complex, but ultimately it just doesn't happen; and to me the more primitive and straightforward 'Do-Deca' is slightly better... But the real brother/family gem in Duplass collection is 'Puffy Chair' - it has more drama and sadness; and it is also more funny. I would suggest skipping the two and go for little masterpieces that are 'Puffy Chair', 'Bag Head' and 'Cyrus'.
  • A good, but not great, film.

I've been a fan of the Duplass Brothers since originally seeing The Puffy Chair, and I think they've gotten consistently better with each effort since that point. The Do-Deca Pentathalon felt like a slight step back after the fantastic Jeff Who Lives at Home. After viewing however, I realized that this was actually filmed before Cyrus and JWLAT, so it makes a bit more sense. Overall, a solid indie flick...but I will be looking forward to the future Duplass films to see their continued development as film-makers.
  • Another terrific effort

The Duplass brothers deliver again with another low budget treat. This time though they stay behind the camera where as in the past Mark and his wife were the lead characters. But the lead actors are all terrific, in particular the estranged brother. If u liked The Puffy Chair or Baghead you can't go wrong with this entry.

The latest installment from the Duplass Brothers is in my opinion their best effort to date. A comedy that will hit close to home for brothers everywhere, though I recommend for everyone.
